It's All About the Dogs! December 2009

 Greetings!

The Richmond Hill K9 Klub would like to wish all of our members, sponsors, friends and canine companions the best for this holiday season.  May your stockings be filled with love and treats!

We can't believe it has already been two months since the new park opened and what a change in the weather!  Please take a moment to check out some of the latest news, especially our latest park "issue".

Once again we wish to thank everyone for their support in making this park happen and continuing to assist us with daily maintenance and feedback.

Happy Holidays!

Richmond Hill Santa Claus Parade
K9 Klub at Santa Claus Parade

 Sunday, November 15th, 2009

The Richmond Hill K9 Klub once again participated in the Santa Clause Parade.  An entourage of 15 plus dogs and owners braved a two hour staging near Elgin Mills and Yonge St.

Led by our new club banner, we walked proudly down Yonge Street to Hillcrest Mall.

The dogs were a hit!  Thanks to all of those who participated and we look forward to doing it again next year!  Pictures will be available on our 'new website' when live.

Park Issue - "Poopsicles"

Now that snow has hit the ground and stayed, we are burdened with a new issue that needs to be addressed quickly to help ensure the park remains open beyond this pilot project period.

The issue is the "poop and scoop" rule, which is actually a Town Bylaw.

Although the rule (bylaw) is posted on the park rule board at the entrance and on numerous signs throughout the park, it is being ignored by many park users.

As dog owners, we are well aware of the challenge in removing winter "poopsicles" on our own properties.  If neglected, the spring thaw will reveal a disgusting and unhealthy minefield.  Furthermore, some dogs, especially puppies, are attracted to them and can consume them.

Our park volunteers have been chipping out and removing dozens each day.  This is not what they signed up for.

Sure, an accident can happen, but judging from the quantities we are finding, it is pure laziness and lack of dog supervision.

To help address this issue, we are working with Bylaw enforcement to begin issuing tickets to those who willfully contravene this bylaw.

Please help us out by reminding patrons of their responsibility.  I doubt very much it is any of the K9 Klub members, so I would encourage you to forward this newsletter to your dog friends and get them involved!

K9 Klub to-do list

You may have heard rumors that a new Richmond Hill K9 Klub Website is under construction.  It is true!  Although we had hoped to have it completed for December, it looks like it will be a couple more weeks.  Stay tuned!

The installation of the Klub bulletin board has been delayed until the spring thaw.

The first of several Public Meetings that will take place over the course of this pilot project is still on the agenda.  We'll make sure to give everyone a heads up when this date has been settled upon.

Our Annual General Meeting of the Klub will be scheduled for sometime in February.

We are still looking for volunteers to help ensure the leash free area pilot project is a success.

If interested, please email us at volunteer@rhk9klub.ca and we'll send you out full details.  Park Volunteers are given a badge/wallet to wear around their neck so they are easily identified.  We have met on a couple of weekend occasions to hand out instructions and know there are some that can only meet during a weekday for this.  We will inform you in early January of some alternate times.

We have lots more information to share so keep an eye out for future newsletters and notices.  Thank you very much for your support.

Full Membership in the Richmond Hill K9 Klub is currently $20/year and entitles you to attend member only events, official general meetings of the Klub, vote on issues, stand for nomination and election to the board of directors and generally get involved in the politics and growth of the Klub.  Drop us an email if you are interested.
