We will install a solar hot water heating system for one of our families, thanks to a grant from HFH Canada's Built Smart 360  program.

Volunteers from the BC Sustainable Energy Association, Okanagan Chapter, are partnering with us on this project. Thanks also to the corporate sponsors of Built Smart 360 whose generosity made it possible.

ELK ROAD UPDATE

Elk Road excavation Families in before Christmas
There haven't been any Build Bulletins sent out to our build volunteers for awhile. This is because the Elk Road site is turned over to a road consruction crew and we are awaiting the installation of utilities at the second duplex.

After that work is finished and our volunteers are able to return to the site, we will just have some finishing touches and landscaping to do and our two newest families will be able to move in!

Are you interested in volunteering with us? Do we have your up-to-date contact information? Please give our Volunteer Coordinator, Teri Webber, a call at 778-477-4345 or email her at teri@habitatforhumanitykelowna.ca.

Money raised locally stays in community
Thanks to the efforts of the staff at the Kelowna, Westbank and Vernon Home Depots, more than $13,000 will flow to our local building programs. Staff raised the money by asking shoppers to donate to the "Paper Hammer" campaign.

We are grateful for Home Depot's efforts on our behalf and the generous support of Home Depot customers.

This
achievement is due to the hard work of all the Habitat for Humanity affiliates around the world.  Board members and volunteers from Paterson Habitat for Humanity in New Jersey, a long time tithe partner of Habitat Kenya, traveled to Kenya to help complete the milestone house. The city of Paterson was recently hit hard by flooding in the wake of Hurricane Irene.
GOVERNOR GENERAL SUPPORTS HABITAT
Calls for more government support

Governor General David Johnston recently told the Canadian Press: "It may well be that we'll see more arrangements where Habitat for Humanity will be receiving lanGovernor General Johnstond from CMHC or from the local municipality or from the provincial government because they've shown themselves so able and effective in taking that resource of land, and building a house on it that accommodates a family that would not otherwise have a house," Johnston said. "I'd love to see much more of that."

Asked if volunteerism was expected to replace government programs, Johnston explained, "I don't see volunteerism as substituting for what government has done, or might have done, or should have done. I see volunteerism as something that is central unto itself."
