Call for Volunteers
He's quiet and retiring, but we want to give a shout-out to volunteer Rob D., who has brought his carpentry skills to the site. Says Rob: "I enjoyed working with others to fulfill two family's dreams of home ownership."
"To me.... the driving of the nails and the sawing of the boards to actually build the houses, are a part of... the universality of God's love... [that's why] for example, we don't discriminate in selecting families.... we build for Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Jews and for people of other faiths or no faith. We also... ask every local affiliate, through tithing, to help build in other countries as they build locally."
HFH Kelowna is a community-based, non-profit, faith-based organization working for a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.
APPLICANT INFORMATION NIGHTS
More partner families to be selected
Habitat for Humanity Kelowna is holding two public information nights for families interested in applying to become Habitat partner families.
Two families will be selected for our second duplex on the Westside, which we will start building in April for occupancy before the end of 2011.
We are not building in Kelowna at this time.
Habitat for Humanity wants to do more than build houses. We also want to build a strong community. That is why we are looking for families who are willing to work with us and with others. We are looking for good neighbours. Please share this information with anyone you think might benefit from participation in the Habitat for Humanity program.
Partner families must provide 500 hours of sweat equity and pay a mortgage. However, no downpayment is required. Photo credit HFHI
With the help of all our volunteers and the generous support of many local companies, the first duplex at the Elk Road site is almost finished. Painting and interior finishing is the last step of the project -- most of the landscaping will wait until road access is completed and the second duplex is underway later this spring. (AHI) explains: "Housing is what defines and makes neighborhoods. People who invest in improving their housing improve their cities. Improve housing and you not only improve the physical city, you also improve the policy and economic environment."
For most families, the home is also the basis of their personal economic security. In countries like Canada, property law clearly sets out title to home ownership. But for millions of the world's poor, home is a squatter's shanty. Others work a small patch of farm where their family has lived for generations -- but they have no piece of paper establishing ownership. And tragically, in some countries, long-established property laws have been disregarded for political motives. [read more]
