| We're going to the Tommies!
|
| We are very grateful to have been chosen by the Canadian Home Builders' Association -- Central Okanagan, as the featured charity at the upcoming Tommie Gold Gala, to be held at the Delta Grant Okanagan on February 12th. Part of the evening's entertainment will be an auction conducted by Mike Odenbach of Western Star Auctions, with partial proceeds going to our building fund. The prestigious Tommie awards recognize excellence in building and design. |
| Did You Know? |
There are Global Village projects not only in developing countries but also in impoverished areas
in the United States. The director of volunteers for a Habitat affiliate in Florida invites volunteers to "Lachoochee, FL [where] there are homes without water and electricity; you can see people outside huddling around bonfires and going to the bathroom in their backyard since their home doesn't have plumbing."

WESTSIDE BUILD NEWS
|
| Elk Road Update
As of the end of 2010, our volunteers have put in more than a thousand hours building the duplex on Elk Road. In addition, we've received help from groups such as The Home Depot Canada "Team Depot," Delta Grand Okanagan, Edgecombe Builders, Okanagan College students, and the West Kelowna Fire Department.
We are currently working on installing the drywall. Project Coordinator Ken Kunka reports that we are coming down the home stretch of this build -- soon we will be installing trim, painting and adding the finishing touches to make a house a home. In just a few months we will be starting the second duplex on the Elk Road property. Watch this space for an exciting announcement of new partnerships for this phase of the build! |
FINISHING TOUCHES | | We've received donations of lighting and bathroom fixtures from the generous folks at Robinson Lighting in Penticton and Kelowna. In addition to lighting, we're looking for baseboard trim and flooring, and soon we will need landscaping bricks and fencing material. Thanks to the private individuals who have donated building materials to us, including insulation, lights, and tiles. Thanks also to Grace Lutheran Church, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation for their financial support, |
REALTY EXECUTIVES RESPONDS
| | Kelowna 4th Most Expensive City in Canada
According to Robert Fine, Director of Economic Development for the Regional District of the Central Okanagan, "Kelowna is the oldest census city in Canada, with 20 per cent of the population aged over 65."
Of course Kelowna is an attractive retirement area, but another reason for this demographic shift is high real estate prices -- young families simply cannot afford to settle here. A recent study of housing prices listed Kelowna as the fouth most expensive place to live in the country, after Vancouver, Victoria and Abbostford. Robert Fine believes that the high price of housing could adversely affect Kelowna's economic well-being. [Source: 1150 AM radio news]
Realtors donate portion of commission
On Friday, January 21, Brigitte Reimer, chairperson of Habitat for Humanity Kelowna, received a cheque for $2,000 from Tina Marlow, Office Manager at Realty Executives Kelowna. Managing Broker Nadine Westgate, not pictured, organized a program whereby realtors donate a portion of their commissions on real estate sales. This generous program is now in its third year. Funds will be used for our current build program.
