GLOBAL VILLAGE SPOTLIGHT
|
|
Tragedy in Haiti Habitat for Humanity has an affiliate in Haiti. Canadian donations to the relief effort will be matched dollar for dollar by the federal government. HFH International will focus on clearing debris, then providing shelter kits to the homeless. Click here to go to HFH National's Haiti appeal donation page. Thank you.
Local family going to Fiji When Lynette De Zwaan won airline tickets to Fiji, she and her husband looked for a way to turn their vacation into a means of serving others. Searching the internet, they found Habitat for Humanity's Global Village program and learned that there was a HFH affiliate in Fiji.
Husband Andre explains,"with a Global Village team of 8 others, we will be working on a Water Sanitation project." The De Zwaans make their trip this March. Global Village participants must cover all of their own expenses including in-country costs, airfare, travel insurance and a $650 donation. You can give a tax-receiptable donation to this project by following this link.
Where is Lesotho?
Lesotho is a small African nation that lies within the borders of South Africa. HFH Lesotho builds homes for foster mothers to care for orphans. The local affiliate partners with World Vision and SOS Children's Villages to maximize its impact.
Canadianaffiliates are asked to tithe (give ten percent of) unrestricted donations to a Habitat affiliate in the developing world and the Kelowna affiliate decided to focus on one country. We chose Lesotho, in part because thanks to a CIDA (Canadian International Development gency) grant, our dollars are matched three-to-one.
Love in the mortar joints
Darlene Stewart of Kelowna is back from a Global Village trip to Guatemala where she and 12 other Canadians helped local masons construct cinder block Habitat homes.
Says Darlene, "It was truly a humbling and wonderful experience and I can hardly wait for my next trip!!" Follow the link for a YouTube slideshow about the team's trip. HFH founder Millard Fuller used to say his goal in building houses was always to put love in the mortar joints -- and it's good to know that Darlene and the team also put rebar in the concrete blocks to provide earthquake protection.
