The Middle East is in turmoil, northern Japan has been devastated, drug wars rage in parts of Mexico, and Haiti and New Zealand are working to recover from devastating earthquakes. In which of these countries does Habitat for Humanity have a presence?
Habitat is active and working in
Haiti,
New Zealand,
Mexico and
Japan. There is an affiliate in
Egypt, but not in Tunisia, Libya, Yemen, or Syria. Habitat for Humanity has
helped victims of the Christchurch, NZ earthquake find shelter, and
helped shelter over 24,000 Haitians. The HFH Japan organization is currently mobilizing volunteers to help with
clean-up operations while conducting assessments for long-term rebuilding plans.
Sadly, there are some countries, such as Liberia, Zimbabwe and the Congo, where Habitat has had to suspend its operations because of civil unrest and war. Democracies and emerging democracies are more likely to foster HFH affiliates.
As political freedom and stability spreads, so does Habitat -- for example, the people of Cambodia endured one of the most
totaliarian regimes in human history; they are rebuilding their country and
Habitat is there. Elton John is sponsoring a major HFH home-building project.
