It won't be long before two more partner families move into their new homes on the Westside. We'll have more details about the successful conclusion of the first phase of the Elk Road project in our next newsletter.

for breaking news and Habitat news from all over, such as this Wall Street Journal article that explains that despite the wave of foreclosures nation-wide in the USA, Habitat forecloses on very few families.

Hans Andersen
Hans C. Andersen, one of the founders of the Kelowna affiliate, has passed away.

Our condolences to his widow Phyllis and to his family. Hans left a lasting legacy in the on-going work of Habitat for Humanity. Those first houses Hans helped to build have financed more houses, which in turn will finance more houses, transforming the lives of low-income families with children here in the Central Okanagan.

PARTNERSHIP WITH COLLEGE

Okanagan College students will build with us

Win-Win partnership
We're pleased to announce that we have partnered with the Residential
Construction program of Okanagan College for our next bulding project, the second of two duplexes on Elk Road on the Westside.

Okanagan College has collaborated with Habitat for Humanity on build projects in Vernon and Penticton and we're delighted that we will be working together here in Kelowna. The students will work on the project from foundation to "lock up," gaining valuable real-life construction experience while building two more homes for low-income families with children.

ALL THE TROUBLE IN THE WORLD

Habitat around the world
The Middle East is in turmoil, northern Japan has been devastated, drug wars rage in parts of Mexico, and Haiti and New Zealand are working to recover from devastating earthquakes. In which of these countries does Habitat for Humanity have a presence?

Habitat is active and working in Haiti, New Zealand, Mexico and Japan. There is an affiliate in Egypt, but not in Tunisia, Libya, Yemen, or Syria. Habitat for Humanity has helped victims of the Christchurch, NZ earthquake find shelter, and helped shelter over 24,000 Haitians. The HFH Japan organization is currently mobilizing volunteers to help with clean-up operations while conducting assessments for long-term rebuilding plans.

Sadly, there are some countries, such as Liberia, Zimbabwe and the Congo, where Habitat has had to suspend its operations because of civil unrest and war. Democracies and emerging democracies are more likely to foster HFH affiliates.

As political freedom and stability spreads, so does Habitat -- for example, the people of Cambodia endured one of the most totaliarian regimes in human history; they are rebuilding their country and Habitat is there. Elton John is sponsoring a major HFH home-building project.
