GVHS Members Have Fun Touring Other Members Farms And Watching Demos At The Annual Meeting

The Presidents Corner

March 2, 2012

To the Members of the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society:

I am pleased to report the 2012 Annual Meeting in Lewisville, Texas was a great success. We had 57 members sign up and 47 attend. The speakers were outstanding; the demonstrations and farm tours were great; the auction a success; the camaraderie too, too good; and, the weather was beautiful. We could not have asked for a better weekend.

It was obvious that a lot of people - too many to name here - worked untold hours to make the event come off looking like it was just another weekend, but for one who spent time working with the folks responsible for the success, I thank you for your selflessness.

Two very important observations that I had early on ... the number of young people who were in attendance, and the number of our Canadian members who came from afar to be with us. The future of the GVHS lies in our ability to attract and retain young people who love the breed as we do, and as far as the Canadian attendees are concerned - Thank You, your continued support is appreciated.

During the Board Meeting on Friday, February 24, Kathy Mutti was elected the new Secretary of the GVHS. Her contact information will be posted on the Website soon and I encourage you to use email to communicate with her as much as possible. As she is in Canada, telephone calls and snail mail postage are more expensive. Kathy and Barb will be getting the Society's official books sorted out over the next several weeks so you may experience some delay in the normal quick responses you are accustomed to, but please be patient. Also, for the time being, all regular mail can still be sent to the GVHS post office box.

The Board took an aggressive look at the 2012 budget and Director Reidel has been charged to conduct a thorough "relook" to ensure the income and expense projections are appropriate. This is especially important as we move forward to fund the 2012 projects and programs the Board has tentatively approved. We will announce the highlights once the budget is approved on March 31st.

In the past, the Board asked the Annual Meeting attendees for recommendations for the location of the next annual meeting site. This year we did not do so. Instead, we are asking the general membership for location nominations - remembering the meeting will be held in late February 2013. Please email me at blmbigdog@yahoo.com with your recommendations. I will answer each respondee as quickly as I can, but remember, we can only go to one place. All suggestions will be given thorough consideration and the decision will be made at the Board meeting on Sunday, March 31st. Send me your thoughts soon.

We hope to see all of you at the 2013 Annual Meeting in __________________________________.

 GVHS MEMBERS MEET IN TEXAS
On Feb 24-26, 2012, GVHS members gathered for a fun filled weekend in Lewisville Texas.  On Friday there was a board meeting with members invited to participate, and it lasted around 5 hours, with many topics discussed.  After the meeting there was a meet and greet reception where members got acquainted.  On Sat there were several informative guest speakers, followed by a yummy lunch.  Following the afternoon sessions we had a wonderful dinner followed by the year end awards presentation and an entertaining and very successful auction.  We would like to thank all of those who donated to the auction.  On Sunday there was a caravan of members driving the beautiful countryside of Texas to visit many farms and their beautiful Gypsy Vanners and enjoy a  genuine Texas barbecue.  Thank you to the members for generously opening your doors to visit your farms and see the breed demos.  The GVHS would like to extend a huge thank you to all those that donated items and to those that purchased items.

New Member's First GVHS annual Meeting Experince

The trip to Lewisville, Texas for the GVHS national meeting was amazing to me as a newcomer to GVHS. I was in awe of the beauty of the Gypsy Vanner horses I saw. Our hosts for the Gypsy Vanner horse farm tour were so very cordial. I saw some really nice facilities, and was just a bit envious. I was mesmerized by the gypsy dressage demonstration, but then I've always loved dressage. The driving expo was very interesting. The demonstration of cutting horse training methods

with gypsies was quite remarkable. I just couldn't wait to get home and tell my quarter horse friends about it.

At the banquet, I had the privilege of meeting June Brown whose sculptures of Gypsy Vanner horses so wonderfully depict the beauty of the breed. I have never had so much fun at an auction as I did that evening. It was a great fund raiser for GVHS.

The overall impression that I came away with is the fact that way owner's /breeders want to share their passion for the breed with others. They gave me such a warm welcome that I will never forget. I just can't wait for next year's meeting.
