VANNER FAIR UPDATE
Where: Caledon, Ontario, Canada
When: September 23rd, 24th, 25th
The Vanner Fair weekend is fast approaching and the organizers are putting the final touches on the details. As the inaugural Fair, it will ultimately be a product of the evolution of a vision brought to fruition with the inspiration and ideas of many people and many hours of work and re-work of the key areas and events.
It is our expectation that every attendee will have fun and walk away with some new friends and a better understanding of and appreciation for the Gypsy Vanner horse breed.
As of today we expect to have over 35 Gypsy Vanner Horses from at least 15 farms in attendance at the Fair. These horses are coming from Quebec, Ontario, Michigan, Ohio and as far away as Florida! There are still a few stall spaces remaining. Get your registration forms in. We'd love to have even more farms attend.
We are also aware that many CGVHC and GVHS Members will be attending the Fair without their horses. As there are events planned and special access allowed for all attending Members, we need a count of those attendees in advance of the Fair.
There will be a Judges & Breeders Seminar during the day on Friday and a Members' reception Friday evening. On Saturday the Fair is open to the public. All CGVHC & GVHS Members attending should check in at the Concierge Desk to receive your VIP bracelet. This will entitle you access to a Members' Only Lounge and other privileges. On Saturday evening the riding arena will be transformed into a concert and dance hall as we have a band coming to entertain. Sunday morning is the Members' Trail Ride, followed by brunch.
Again, in order to organize these events to accommodate all, we would like to know in advance that you will be coming. Even if you have communicated with us already, please send a quick with the subject line: Vanner Fair RSVP and let me know when you plan on being at the Fair and which of the above events you are interested in attending. Also, please relay where you have booked accommodations to help us plan the Fair Shuttle.
Vanner Fair is a part of DESTINATION EQUITATION, a 9-day celebration of all things equestrian in the Hills of Headwaters tourism area. More information on other events happening during this time can be found at the Hills of the Headwaters website at www.thehillsofheadwaters.com and clicking on Experience>Horses in the Hills. Note that this website does not necessarily include the most accurate itinerary for Vanner Fair. For that you are best to go directly to the Events section of the Vanner Fair website at www.vannerfair.com .
We look forward to this gathering and to meeting many members for the first time at Vanner Fair!
Regards,
Kathy Mutti,
2011 CGVHC Co-ordinator

GVHS Members Meet | |
On August 20th and 21st, GVHS members met in Nashville, Tennessee for a round table session.
This meeting was an opportunity to dissect and scrutinize the current activities of the GVHS and attempt to refocus the Society leadership in order to address the needs of the members and better realize the Mission of the Society. The meeting was moderated by GVHS Interim Executive Director, Wayne Hipsley.
It was an opportunity to meet members from many different areas with a common passion to preserve and protect the Gypsy Vanner breed. The diverse group in attendance ensured representation of members both by geography, interest and size of operations.
It was agreed that first and foremost the GVHS is a Gypsy Vanner Horse registry. The mandate of the registry is to preserve and protect the breed and the breed standard. That is done through careful documentation of the history, conformation and type of each registered Gypsy Vanner Horse, their offspring and imported horses. This also requires education for both breeders and purchasers of Gypsy Vanner Horses.
Moving forward, a number of the GVHS Directors seats are opening up in 2012. Qualified and interested replacements for them are needed to ensure the GVHS has the appropriate leadership in place to fulfill its Mission. These leaders will be charged with the task of maintaining the focus of the GVHS and moving the Society forward in the best interest of the Gypsy Vanner Horse breed. Improved communication with the general GVHS membership is required. Breed education will be a key focus area.
Information will be coming soon regarding the Directors responsibilities and the nomination and election process. |

Gypsy Vanner Calendar | | We have enjoyed creating and growing the Gypsy Vanner Horse wall
calendar over the last few years, and want to thank all of the participants and supporters who have made this possible. Together, we have raised awareness about the breed and given the public a chance to meet individual horses and owners. Now, for 2013, we have an opportunity to add a weekly or engagement calendar. This would be in addition to the 2013 wall calendar, which is already in design. We like the idea of the weekly calendar, because it would allow more folks to participate at a lower price point. Aesthetically, it would allow the use of vertical images, which have never fit into the horizontal format of the wall calendar. We could also use some of your favorite images of a horse which we could not use again in the wall calendar. And it would be possible for you to show more than one horse. 2013 GVH Weekly calendar: approx 6"w x 9"h, spiral bound 52 spreads, plus front & back matter each spread - left page displays an image, caption could be horse's name and/or owner's website, right page has days of the week and small inset of the month

An Interview with Gypsy Vanner Judge David Riedel
Provide some of your background and experience.
My experience in the horse industry started in 1969 training horses with my father who contracted with the government training mustangs and then shipping them to adoptions as directed by the Department of Agriculture. My life continued in 4-H showing horses from 1969 to 1979, which yielded two county championships, and one showmanship with honors at the state level. In 1980 I received my first Ranger bred horse Association World Championship in aged mare and men's pleasure. I continued to train and show horses but have started to exhibit harness horses, one to eight up hitches, for First Merit bank performing 300 outings a year until 1996 when the economy changed.
I received my 1st judging card in 1992 with the state of Ohio and since have received cards with Indiana Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Illinois, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and New York. I also have cards with Morgan association, Walking horse, Gypsy Vanner Horse Society, Palomino Horse Association, Appaloosa Horse Association, AMHR, Shetland pony, American Snaffle Bit Association, Pinto horse society, and Shire Horse Registry. I have judged futurities with Gypsy Vanner, open breed shows, West Virginia state fair, Miniature Horse "R", Shetland, Hackney, COSCA association, driving events for the National Driving Association. I teach conformation judging for Medina county judging teams for the last 12 years. My judge's evaluations are on line available with the OSU judge's evaluations that reflect 30 shows a year.
Have you judged Vanners yet and if so can you share your experience you had judging them?
The beauty of working with an association like GVHS is the guidelines are given in rules and breed standards. Having the chance from the beginning I am able to take that experience in to the show ring to uphold the association intent of the breed. So many breeds want to be everything to everyone and then they destroy the true intent of the breed. GVHS is a breed that is a combination of beauty of the feathering and substance to the muscling and bone. The halter horse will also function as a performance horse which many breeds have problems achieving. The show committee that put on the show provided the judges with the picture of an ideal of the breed which was beneficial when identifying the breed characteristics.
Have you any experience with draft breeds over all?
My experiences with Draft breeds have seen the draft pony rise and fall to the Heflinger Associations changes and differences of opinion description and intent of the breed. I have enjoyed the beauty of the Percherns in the show ring, field, and with the association, but I am disgusted with the rule book designation of the breed "what placed first at the last show is what the breed standard is for today" Judging for many of the draft associations is required to be a breeder in order to judge their shows. This is a real disservice to the association because then it creates the atrocity of horses, as Wayne Hipslely exhibited of Draft horses of old in England. Remember Conformation Judging is to promote the long productive life of the animal, not just to make it to the meat market.
How do you judge conformation and athletic ability? And do you feel our breed can maintain its true breed type and still have athletic ability?
The true strength of a breed is in the strength of the leadership of the association, to not only post a written description of your breed but the inclusion of a picture is the best way to insure the ideal of the breed is understood. Conformation is very descript in the GVHS Breed description. I like to start with a "form to function" for the first set of traits to be considered in judging conformation (in this case draft characteristics). Then I use a Five major criteria for judging a horse balance, structure and travel, muscle, quality, then breed and sex characteristics, in this order. A horse with poor form for a Grand Prix show jumper could have excellent conformation for a World Champion cutting horse, or to be a champion draft horse. Every horse has good and bad points of its conformation and many horses (including Olympic caliber horses) excel even with conformation faults.
In comparison to other breeds that you have judged, what characteristics stick out to you as a Gypsy Vanner judge that impact your decision when judging?
Feathering, muscle, bone development, and temperament.
Do you feel the GVHS Judges/Breeders seminar is helpful to judges learning about our breed? And is there anything you would like to see added to this program
I feel to maintain an integrity within our organization it must be mandatory to have the judges maintain a file with the association that identifies: ongoing yearly education, annual rule book test, annual organizational membership fees, bi-annual training from the organization, and an evaluation of all GVHS shows, with a minimum of 3 shows a year of open any breed shows. This will allow potential show committees information to decide if the judge will work in the capacity they may want. |
