                  Breed Partnership

ADS Logo  The Gypsy Vanner Horse Society is proud to announce a Breed Partnership agreement with the American Driving Society.  The goal of this partnership is the mutual promotion of he discipline of Carriage Driving and the Gypsy Vanner Horse.  This is a natural fit for our breed whose conformation and disposition is well suited for carriage driving.

The American Driving Society  was established in 1976 and its purposes include the  promotion of the best interests of the sport of driving carriages both competitively and for pleasure and also the education of the public with respect to driving methods, safety and events.

As Breed Partners the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society and the American Driving Society will provide website links and an exchange of relevant photographs or other media which depict Gypsy Vanners and their owners participation in the sport of Carriage Driving. There will also be the opportunity to share in educational efforts such as webinars.

In order to facilitate the dialog between the ADS and the GVHS a Breed Steward is appointed to act as conduit for information.  I, Bill Ricci, have been appointed to this position. Please forward any and all information or questions about this program to [email protected] .

Having been a participant at the Florida Driving Competition in February at the FCMR I can attest that Gypsy Vanners were well represented at the Event.  Sandra Pelton of Pelton Vanners driving "D'Jango Jazz", Sue McCrory Driving "Starbuck"  for Gypsy Vanner Ranch, Dave Essary driving "WR Destiny", Bill Ricci in the commercial division with "Esmeralda" and Bob Giles winning the single Pony Division with Villa Vanners' "Romeo".  Bob also won the Multiples division with WR Ranch's  4-in-hand with "Esmeralda" and "Jasmine" as the wheelers and "Pie" and "Swirl" as leaders.

As I go on the ADS website and review some recent results I note that Julie Anthony and her Gypsy Vanner "Spencer" were in first place in Prelim Single Horse at Black Prong Event in March..

I imagine there is much more we could highlight so please forward information about driving and your Vanners to Bill Ricci at  [email protected] .

April 8, 2011

First of all, this is Rob's story of life. He was and will always be the most gentle man who cared deeply about all of God's Creations. His life revolved around being a man after God's heart: helping anyone and everyone he could, mentoring young people and future horsemen, and being so humble he could not fathom all the posts to him on CaringBridge the past 11 weeks. Rob took care of everything and could do everything. He was a Husband, a Father, a Horseman, a Friend, a Farmer, a Mechanic, a Plumber, a Fixer of anything that needed fixing, and most of all, he was available to help, visit, feed, pray for, and serve at any time of day or night. His favorite time of the year was Road Pony Camp and he dedicated many hours to helping children of all ages learn, love, and increase their desire to ride, drive and show safely as a team with horses and ponies. He believed strongly that the future of the horse industry depended on our education of the youth.

Rob trained horses all his life--pretty much since his pre teens when he broke World Champion Shetlands for a neighbor to drive and show in hand. As a teenager, he added Standardbred  oadsters and Saddlebreds, again, with great success. In college he had a full time training position and completed 16 hours every semester toward his degree. Married in 1968 , his mother-law-added Morgans and later there were many World Champion titiles after his US Army service. He trained and showed World Champions in 4 breeds and saddle seat equitation. Rob was a

USEF judge in many divisions, well known for his honesty and fairness. Rob raised two beautiful children and supported three families during a 3 year time period when he was the only male available to do so. He farmed 700 acres and trained horses

at night to make ends meet for everyone. When the farm was split he continued to farm 300 hundred acres with hay and oats . Our lives were spent together as a family with God at the center of everything. Rob was our tower of Strength and Love every single day. Rob lived his life working everyday doing what he loved the most. He never complained and always had a kind word for and about others. I never heard him speak falsley or badly about

anyone , even if they maligned him. Our son lived with cancer for 3 years and died in 1988 in Rob's arms. Faith got us thru and made us stronger . Rob never wavered, he was steadfast and true to all he believd in and embraced all of us with his love and courage.

Fast forwarding to 2003, Julianne had researched the Gypsy horses in England and Ireland and eventually bought a young gelding and mare that Rob had bred in England before

importing both horses in October 2004. Rob was as excited as Julie when Billy O'Brien and Lace arrived in the dark of night. Both horses relaxed with his gentle reassuring touch and the Gypsy Cob/Vanner breed entered our lives and hearts. With the same enthusiasm , Rob trained Billy and Lace to ride and drive for

American shows and discovered he had fancy entries that he showed in both open competition and Gypsy shows.  Many amateur and juvenile owners learned to handle., harness, ride and drive under Rob's patient hand and heart. It was Rob Wilson's

priviledge to train wonderful horses for the show ring, breed and foal world Champions, and help others find the horse of their dreams. The Wilson family wishes to thank all our Saddlebed, Morgan, Standardbred, Aqha and Gypsy friends for their kindnesses and encouragement during his 11 weeks at MD

Anderson in Houston, Texas. Every day and night he looked forward to reading the posts and always had tears in his eyes to think that so many would care about him. Rob was a true

Gentleman, the Love of my life for 46 years, and a servent to many . May his example of living life with God as his Savior and Friend to All be contagious to all who knew him.

Thank you and God Bless You

Julianne Wilson

It's Magic

Magic

Six year old Caroline Patterson's biggest dream was to ride a horse, and thanks to Magic of Grey Ghost Gypsy Horses her dreams came true.   She was able to talk her folks into visiting Grey Ghost Gypsy Horses at Oakdancer Farm on St. Helena Island, SC. Her mom, Julie, said it was Caroline's best weekend ever.  It started with a farm visit on a Saturday with her mom, dad, and twin brother, Joseph.  After much time was spent feeding treats to the horses, Magic came in for a bathing and grooming demonstration.  After the demonstration, Debbie (owner of Grey Ghost Gypsy Vanners) gave Caroline a horseshoe as a memento of her visit.  Caroline had so much fun she asked if she could come back the next day to ride Magic.  Debbie's answer was yes, of course.   The next day she came back with horseshoe in hand and got to ride Magic.  Her mom said she had slept with the horseshoe.  While she was riding her mom asked how riding a horse felt.  Her answer was immediate - AWESOME!

This was not Magic's first time making kids' dreams come true.  She and the other horses at Grey Ghost Gypsy Vanners have been used at numerous birthday parties, school functions, and horse expositions over the years.  Magic, Phantom, and now Navarre are always a hit with people wherever they go.  Debbie loves to have guests and children come visit the horses.  Many of her friends and relatives bring their children and grandchildren to experience this special breed of horse.  Debbie says, "We know the Gypsy Vanner is beautiful to look at and has a great disposition but seeing them interact with children is truly special.  Magic seems to instinctively know who feels more comfortable on her and adjusts her stride accordingly.  I remember my first ride on a horse; I was four years old.  I was so excited.  It started a lifelong passion to work with horses and is something I will never forget.  I hope by sharing this breed with others, especially children, it will encourage their love of horses and this breed in particular."  Debbie told Caroline's mom that the probability is high that she will not outgrow her love of horses.   Sure enough several days after the visit her mom dropped off a thank you picture that Caroline had drawn of Magic, not for Debbie but for Magic to be given to her directly and to be kept at the barn for her.
