Outdoor and Sporstman Show a new feature this year!

The Salamanca Area Chamber of Commerce proudly presents Salamanca's 33rd Annual Falling Leaves Festival with a weekend filled with activities and entertainment for the whole family. Jefferson Park, Broad Street, and Main Street are the backdrops for art and craft vendors, food concessions, live music, outdoor and sportsman exhibitors, car display presented by the Chautauqua Lake Region antique Automobile Club of America, Morton's Petting Zoo and Pony Rides, roving entertainment, beer tent, and the zany and hilarious bed races, hot dog eating and hula hoop contests. The young and, well, not-so-young can enjoy the carnival rides and games and of course the weekend highlight is the Grande Parade on Sunday. Falling Leaves Festival is a beloved community event that was started in 1976 by concerned citizens who wanted to present a festival that would build community pride and allow for people to work together. The events team at the Chamber has been hard at work designing activities and events for this year's festival that will create a positive impression to the more than 10,000 people that are expected to attend.

Salamanca's Own Museum Row: Part One

Institutions for Culture, History, and Learning

In last month's email update we mentioned that the Chamber's office has welcomed visitors from all around the world who have followed the tourist information signs to our front door. Many of these visitors made Salamanca an intended destination for a variety of reasons including many niche travelers who wanted to learn more about the Native American culture, local and regional history, and the rail history. The helpful staff at the Salamanca Area Chamber of Commerce invites visitors and residents to explore Salamanca's three quality museums for a diverse learning and experiential opportunity: Salamanca Area Historical Society Museum, Seneca-Iroquois National Museum, and Salamanca Rail Museum. We often call this collection of museum's "Salamanca's Own Museum Row." In the next few months we'll take a closer look at each of these museums and we hope that you will make the time to spend an afternoon in Salamanca to explore the culture and history of the area.

Salamanca Area Historical Society Museum is located at 125 Main Street in a spectacularly restored building that dates back to 1882. The Salamanca Area Historical Society got its start in 1995 when then Mayor Rosalyn Hoag realized that much of the city's history was being disposed of as elderly citizens were passing away and there wasn't an identifiable repository for historic artifacts or memorabilia. A museum coalition was formed and a collection was soon formed and over flowing temporary storage space. A search for an appropriate facility to house the collection and open a museum space led the society to a former bank building that is city owned. Restoration by the city has resulted in a building resplendent in one of the most beautiful examples of late 19th centurey architecture. The success of the museum's early days has lead to hiring of a

professional staff and three full floors of displays and exhibits. The first floor features displays of mainly Salamanca artifacts and history, the second floor has specialty rooms such as a schoolroom and chapel, and the third floor is currently under renovation for expanded themed displays. Knowledgeable staff is always on hand to answer questions or assist with your research. Admission to the museum is free and visitors can leisurely browse or have a guided tour. The musuem is fully physically accessible and air conditioned and open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays 10 am to 4:30 pm. A gift shop is located on the first floor in the former bank vault. Contact Nancy Sedlak for more information at 716-945-2946 or salhistorical@verizon.net.

Salamanca civic and service groups form new alliance

Spearheaded by the Salamanca Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, and Rotary Club, a total of 12 civic and service organizations have joined together to form an alliance, called the Interclub, to tackle community projects that are too large for any one organization. One of the main projects under discussion is to partner with the Main Street Partnership (a partnership consisting of members from the Seneca Nation of Indians, the City of Salamanca, the Salamanca Area Chamber of Commerce, and numerous Main Street businesses and property owners) to design and erect welcoming gateway signage at all major entrances into Salamanca. Other projects under discussion are a senior's park behind the Senior Center and working together on joint vendor booths at local festivals. If your civic or service group is not already part of the Interclub, contact the Chamber at 716-945-2034 or info@salamancachamber.org to get involved.
