FOOD PROGRAM
Great news, the YMCA and the Atlantic School System have teamed up to bring you the "Summer Lunch Program". This program will feed children 18 years old and younger. This will be coordinated through the school system and housed here at the YMCA. Kids in our TLC Summer program and those just hanging out at the YMCA can have a nutritious lunch and snack almost all summer long. All we ask is that you sign your child up the week before so we have an accurate number. There is no cost to you. We will be looking for some volunteers to help us man the lunch line and monitor the room. If you or your youth group, church group, or neighborhood group would like to volunteer once a week or so, just give me a call and become a part of a volunteer army in service to others. |
Boston Marathon
Chad Forde, one of our very own members, accomplished something that runners only dream of.... running in the Boston Marathon. Chad lives in Atlantic, is married, has two daughters, and works for Owner Revolution. This article tells Chad's road to Boston.
I qualified for Boston at the Des Moines Marathon back in October of 2009. Needing a time of 3:20:00 to qualify, I hit my goal with a 3:19:42. Training for Boston began around Christmas time. Most of my training was done outdoors in the harsh winter conditions, but more importantly the hills. When I was unable train outside, I was fortunate enough to have the YMCA to continue my regimen.
The Boston Marathon itself was almost surreal. The spectator support was over-the-top. I spoke with many people who flew into town just to watch the race. There were estimated to be over 500,000 spectators. The race was crazy from the get go. The number of runners made things very congested and it was difficult at times to get to the water and Gatorade that was much needed. The course layout was extremely difficult with the tougher portion starting at miles 16 thru 21 where a series of hills, ending with "heartbreak hill', taxed what any runner may have had left in their tank. Even the hills of Atlantic could not have prepared me for that. The last few miles, although blurry, were absolutely amazing. Crossing that finish line is something I will never forget.
Total Runners: 26,000
Place Overall: 5,020
My age group: 908
Official Time: 3:22:03
Pace: 7:43
CONGRATULATIONS CHAD ON A JOB WELL DONE!

Hello Everyone,
This past month your YMCA membership numbers grew to an all time high. We have 2133 membership units, the greatest number ever at your YMCA. This translates into over 5300 people are part of the YMCA family! We are excited that you chose to become and to stay a part of this great membership organization. There is strength in numbers and you are part of that strength, and part of the good that this YMCA does in our community for kids and families.
Speaking of great things, our Partnership With Youth general volunteer campaign has finished up, but we certainly are not done. Our wonderful volunteers have raised over $53,000 for the scholarship fund to provide kids and families reduced program and membership rates. We are getting ready to start our 2nd grade water safety program, "SPLASH", which we provide free to all 2nd graders in Atlantic. And now through a grant from the Cass County Community Foundation we will be opening this great program up to the other districts in the county. Our goal is to reach $80,000 for the scholarship program by June 19th which is also our annual golf tournament. This event also benefits this fund. You can still help! We still need you if you have not contributed yet! We are still looking for businesses, individuals, families, or organizations that would like to have their banner up in the gym all year long. We have $500 or $1000 banner opportunities that can advertise your group all year long and make a huge difference in the lives of kids and families right here in your own back yard. Please see me about how you can get involved. Talk to Michelle or myself and see about contributing today.

And finally, we are taking registrations for all of our child development services. This would include registrations for the new Ann Wickman Child Development Center for ages 6 weeks through 5 years; Jack and Jill Preschool for 3 and 4 year olds for the 2010-11 school year (don't forget 4 year old preschool is free but space is limited); and TLC and SummerYers School-age Childcare for this summer and fall. We are now taking registrations for all of our summer and fall programs such as swim lessons, soccer, basketball camps, and a host of other things. Check out the web site for more information or stop by the front desk and get registered today.
Have a great month!

On Saturday, April 24th we had a YMCA/member garage sale, and all proceeds went to our Partnership With Youth Campaign. We would like to thank everyone for their generosity in everything they donated for the event. We had the back gym filled with YMCA and members treasures, and we have to say the event was a success. We made over $1300 for the Partnership With Youth Campaign. A big thanks to everyone who helped set up and tear down, we couldn't have done it without you.
