Hello fellow environmental professionals!
One of my clients just received a $50K penalty (proposed F&O) from Ohio EPA for failure to maintain records and submit quarterly reports. The NOV was 2 years ago! If you are not sure if you are complying with all of the requirements of the Ohio EPA, give me a call!
As part of my ongoing efforts to help educate (and entertain) the regulated industry, I am slowly starting a blog at environmenthq.com. I am going to research and analyze current topics of interest (to me) but if there is anything that you would like to learn more about and want me to dissect it, feel free to email suggestions to admin@endlish.com!
Finally, I am including links in my website (endlish.com), blog, and newsletter to some online sources for obtaining CE credits, certifications, and training... I've used oshacampus and 360training for my 40-hour, ISO 14000, and other certifications. They are very flexible... some I chip away at when I'm bored (which thankfully isn't often).

Reminders Ohio EPA Reports
08/20/2010: Monthly (July) DSW discharge monitoring reports are due.
07/31/2010: The second quarter 2010 deviation reports and first half 2010 semi-annual reports were due. If you have a PER, check your permit-- you may still have a quarterly or semi-annual report due!

Environmental News
Enviro Petroleum (8/9/10) - announced an environmentally friendly breakthrough for the petroleum industry... the introduction of EnviroPlus(R), a patented liquid combustion catalyst which reduces emissions by up to 60%! Aside from the fact that they think this will help "reverse the greenhouse effect" (probably a gov't funded group, LOL), keep an eye on this one!
PlanetWater (8/5/10) has figured out how to bottle drinking water from the Air. It sounds cool but thanks to the high humidity in Ohio lately, I've been drinking the Air for free for weeks!
EPA (6/28/10) finalized the Mandatory Reporting of Greenhouse Gases (GHG, pronounced "gag" ;-D) from Magnesium Production, Underground Coal Mines, Industrial Wastewater Treatment, and Industrial Waste Landfills. These sources start collecting emissions data on 1/1/11 and annual reports are first due on 3/3/12. The link to view the preamble and rule is on my website.

Environmental Compliance Assessment (ECA)
The purpose of the ECA is to ascertain the Air, Water, Hazardous Waste, and Solid Waste permitting and operating requirements for the client, to evaluate the client's current compliance status, and to provide (and help implement) recommendations to achieve and maximize compliance. The annual follow-up ECA provides an opportunity to assess the environmental compliance program and to update the primary ECA report, as needed.

Safety Audit
OSHA or MSHA
Some companies have expressed interest in having a third party conduct a periodic evaluation of the facility for the basic OSHA and MSHA hit list. Those who work there every day sometimes cannot see the trees for the forest (sorry, I had to) but sometimes a fresh set of eyes can spot problems potentially saving your company from some fines. Because of the diversity of facilities and the fact that I would have no control over actually resolving the problems identified, this cannot be a "guaranteed no fines" service but is rather intended to provide another level of review.
