     MAYDAY! MAYDAY!
"Tra-la!  It's May!  The lusty month of May...That darling month where everyone throws self-control away..."  So sings Queen Guenevere in the Broadway classic, Camelot.
But how is it that this lovely month with its "May Day" festivals became associated with a universal distress call?  (The answer is below.)
This month's e-dition features a few "distress calls" of my own -- once again offering some more information to urge a little more "self-control" (even in May) to curtail the deadly epidemic of texting while driving
Since I have been writing on this subject, no less a celebrity than Oprah herself is now sounding her Broken Window"Mayday!" calls as well to stop the deadly practice.  Even Allstate (an insurance company I usually find pretty disagreeable) can sometimes do a good thing, as it is in its "X the Text" Campaign.  Given the sad tragedies that continue to occur due to folks that think "it will never happen to me" (despite even more evidence to the dangers of distraction) the message just needs to be repeated until it sinks in.
Finally, just for fun, I comment on another warning signal -- this one from physicist Stephen Hawking and his recent cautionary comment about sending messages into deep space.
As always, if you are feeling any "legal distress", I hope you won't wait for an alien attack before giving our office a call.  You can visit our website anytime, and even if I can't help you directly, I am always glad to point you in the right direction.

     All the best,

OprahOprah Joins the Anti-"Texting" Fight
On her website and her show, she provides compelling evidence showing that Texting-While-Driving is a deadly epidemic.

While I realize that Oprah is not an avid reader of my e-newsletters (but hey, there is always hope), I do find it interesting that she has jumped on my bandwagon (check out some previous statistics and insights from earlier e-newsletters) calling for an out-and-out BAN on the stupid habit of texting while driving.  Oprah1
She may just be the one person in America that can break our deadly epidemic.  Not only has she featured chilling stories on her show, but her website now includes a quiz to tell you just how much you don't know about texting while driving, how to talk to your teens about this danger, how you can post warnings to your friends by posting a "widget" on Facebook, and even how to turn your friends into Oprah for a possible appearance on her show.
(I could do all of that too...if I had billions of dollars and millions of followers.)
AllstateStand"That's Allstate's stand..."
The (not so) "Good Hands" folks are actually helping this time, through the "X the Text" Campaign.
I confess that I usually don't have a lot of nice things to say about Allstate Insurance Company.  In my experience, the corporate mentality of this major insurer is to deny or delay legitimate claims whenever possible -- not so much "Good Hands" as "Boxing Gloves"  (And it's not just me...horror stories abound across the nation.)
So imagine my surprise when I came across Allstate's website to "X the Text," and there was some pretty good information that helps explain -- especially to teen drivers -- the dangers and real-life consequences involved.
I'm only going to say this once, so listen up -- "Nice job, Allstate."
(Does this mean that when Allstate's customers cause wrecks while texting, Allstate will pay fairly and fully for the harms and losses they caused?  We'll see.)
MetaphorSteven Hawking cries Mayday!
"Not so fast" on the greetings we are sending out to the Cosmos
This story has nothing to do with the law, although it may hold a lesson or two for a trial attorney.  Sometimes what I thought was a great idea might not "sell" so well to a jury.  (This is why, on many cases, I will go before a "focus group" to test a theory, trial theme, or strategy for a client BEFORE going in front of a real-life jury.)  In the same way, acclaimed physicist Stephen Hawking has sounded a bit of a warning that our messages may not be so well-received.
MaydayAnd the real story on "MAYDAY!" is...
Google makes us all instant experts -- or instantly wrong, depending upon the source! -- so here's the instant "expert" answer...  it is an Anglicized version of the French phrase m'aidez, or "Help me!"  (Who knew?)
Community Activities:
MS Walks across the region and the MS Challenge
Coming up throughout May are community walks across the region to help the mission and work of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the MS Society.  This includes a 50-mile MS Challenge walk during the weekend of June 4-6.
As a trustee for the Chapter (and as someone who has personally benefitted from the research of the Society), I urge you to join me in helping this good cause.  To volunteer or contribute, email Tabithia Engle at the MS Society, or call 704-527-0406 (option 2).
