January 26th, 2012

Hello Quilting & Sewing Friends!

Have you stopped by the shop recently? We have many new fabrics & collections just in and more arriving daily! We also have several new kits with samples on display. From soft, romantic florals to vintage automobiles, you are sure to find a kit just right for your next project!

From Moda, enjoy Fig Tree Design's lastest collection called Butterscotch & Roses. This collection is a wonderful mix of mouth watering colors such as Butterscotch, Chocolate and Buttercream mixed with fresh tones of Ruby and Frosting Rose and finished off with the subtle additions of Tarragon and Sky. Inspired by the sights and smells of a recent autumn getaway in the little wine country town of Sonoma, CA.

Classic French elegance is captured beautifully in the new Etchings collection of lush botanical designs by 3 Sisters for Moda. Some featuring delicate, sinuous line work to coordinate with the engraved architectural print derived from an antique book the Sisters acquired on one of their many flea market jaunts. A lovely range of cotton prints in warm shades of grey stone, aqua, rich red and ivory parchment paper are reminiscent of stepping off the bustling Paris streets into a grand foyer of a historic theater with dramatic draperies and ornate moldings.

Along with the Moda yardage on bolts, we have several pre-cuts available in these collections including jelly rolls (2 ½" strips), layer cakes (10" squares) and charm packs (5" squares). Several patterns are available to help inspire your next project!

A truckload of batiks just arrived on our doorstep - over 70 bolts! Brian snapped a photo of some of the new arrivals. If you love batiks, you won't want to miss checking these out!

We have several new children's collections in both woven cotton and flannels. Many have panels which make for a delightfully quick quilt for baby! More surprises are waiting in the back room and will be out in the shop as soon as they are checked in (and we make some room!).

A note to the 2012 Block of the Month participants. You were given a large square to cut your block center but some people had a challenge capturing a centered motif. We decided to give you a larger chunk of fabric to use to cut all 12 of the block centers. This will allow you more flexibility in choosing and centering your design. We will have the larger piece of center block fabric available at our next meeting the second weekend in February.  In the meantime, if you can't get a centered motif from the 5 1/4" block you were given, stop by and we'll give you a new block.

More great classes are coming up soon!

This weekend we are offering finishing classes for the 2011 Kaleidoscope Block of the Month. On Saturday, January 28th, from 10am - 1pm, Sharon will show how to complete the Contemporary setting, including instructions for the Queen size quilt. That afternoon, from 1:30 - 4:30pm, Pam will cover how to complete the Traditional version of the quilt. These classes are free of charge, but please sign up to let us know how many students to expect in each session.  We will cover the details for finishing the quilt tops.  You may bring your machine if you would like to start piecing your top but it is not mandatory.

Marj McDowell is introducing a new 6-session class called Kids Can Quilt starting Monday, February 13th.  This is a class where kids will learn to quilt in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.  Designed for kids 8 years old and up.

On Saturday, February 4th, Shirley will host another Saturday Social.  Bring your favorite project and a dish to share for a fun evening sewing with friends!

On Sunday, February 5th, Kristin Echols will teach the first session of Crazy Quilt As you Go. (Session 2 Feb 26).   In this class you will make crazy quilt blocks complete with decorative stitches.  The blocks are all quilted and then put together into a quilt top using the Reversible Quilt technique.  This is a great way to finish your quilts yourself!

On Saturday, February 18th, mark your calendars for a great purse class called the Villager Purse taught by Purses by Design.  This smart stylish purse has it all - a little softness on the outside with all the benefits of structure on the inside.  Take The Villager anywhere and listen to the compliments. This purse is also a terrific place for piece work and quilting with a large flap closure and lovely rusched handle.  We are proud to say that over 90% of those taking our purse workshops leave with their purse completed.

Mark your calendars for Super Bowl Weekend the first weekend of February! We'll have great savings on all fabric on bolts as well as a Mystery Discount! Watch next week's newsletter and the Shared Stitches Web Page for details.
