Shared Stitches Newsletter

January 12th, 2012

Hello Quilting & Sewing Friends!

The Shared Stitches 2012 Block of the Month program Memories of Provence starts this weekend! We have had a tremendous response to this class! If you have not already signed up and wish to participate, please enroll before Saturday. This will insure that we have enough Block #1 Kits and Instructions prepared for everyone.

Speaking of class sign-ups, if you see a class on the schedule that interests you, make sure to enroll ahead of time. If students just show up the day of class, we have no way of knowing how many people to expect. This may mean that the teacher has cancelled the class due to low enrollment (usually decided one week before the scheduled class date), or there are not enough class supplies available for you or the class is filled. In any case, you will feel disappointed and we do not want to see that happen. Even if a class is free of charge, sign-ups are necessary in order to prepare the proper number of handouts, kits, etc.

In general, we limit sewing classes to no more than 12 students so that everyone gets their own table to work at and adequate space to enjoy the class  We take care to order the supplies needed for the class so everyone signed up has the necessary patterns, tools, etc. The teacher has also taken time from their schedule to conduct this class. So, to help insure that a class you are interested in is a 'go' and the teacher, space and supplies are in place, sign up early!

By the way, for those of you who have had difficulty signing up for classes online we apologize. Brian, our resident computer guru, was up to his ears in inventory - reassigning departments, adjusting counts and even checking in lots of NEW fabric these past two weeks! He has focused his attention back on our website and class listings so they should be getting back in order. If you notice anything missing, be sure to let us know!

We have some exciting classes coming up! Here's your opportunity to learn new techniques from gifted instructors!

Bobbie Jarrett will teach the beautiful Wild Iris Applique wallhanging class in two sessions starting on Sunday, January 22nd.  Session 2 is Jan. 29th.  Bobbie will cover all the tips & techniques to learn how to successfully applique this beautiful design!

Shirley Henriksen will conduct another Strip Therapy class featuring the Electric Fan quilt on January 25th and February 1st in the evening.  Come learn how easy it is to make this stunning design and have lots of fun with Shirley in the process!

Laurel Anderson is returning January 25th and February 1st to teach her amazing Winter Amaryllis wallhanging.  This class is taught during the daytime over two sessions. Two different applique techniques will be presented to make this wonderful 'window' for your wall.

JanSoules will  be teaching the wonderful Salad Spinner

quilt on Thursday, January 26th.  This is a complex looking design but remarkably simple to make.  This quilt looks great made in a variety of fabric types, from 30's to contemporary!

Jan is also teaching her Container Gardening class on Saturday, February 4th.  Whether you use garden motif prints or another novelty print, such as sports, this is a great quilt design to showcase a theme!

If you were at the Elk Grove Quilt Show, you would have  noticed their amazing opportunity quilt made from the Christmas Pickle Dish pattern.  We are fortunate to have Jan Soules come to our shop and teach this design on Thursday, February 23rd.  Come see the sample made by Jan in our shop and you'll want to sign up immediately!

On Sunday, February 5th and 26th, Kristin Echols will teach the reversible quilt design Crazy Quilt As You Go.  We have two samples of this quilt hanging in our classroom.  Kristin will show you how to put together a crazy quilt block, quilt it and then put together your quilted blocks with sashing so all that's left to do is add the binding!

One more set of classes worth mentioning are the three finishing classes for the 2011 Kaleidoscope Block of the Month. On January 28th, from 10am - 1pm, Sharon will show how to complete the Contemporary setting, including instructions for the Queen size quilt. That afternoon, from 1:30 - 4:30pm, Pam will cover how to complete the Traditional version of the quilt. These classes are free of charge, but please sign up to let us know how many students are coming to each session.

If you prefer, you can attend the third class and quilt your blocks BEFORE sewing them together using the Reversible Quilt technique. This technique will be taught by Kristin Echols in a two-part class April 1st and 22nd. You can bring your 2011 Kaleidoscope blocks or any set of blocks you would like to make into a quilted quilt. Just add binding!

With January nearly half way finished, it's probably a good idea to have you mark your calendars for some great

upcoming events. Don't miss the Folsom Quilt Show this February 10-12 at the Folsom Community Center. This year's theme is 'Tides of Time' and this show is definitely a must-see for all quilters. LOTS of inspiration awaits you! We have information postcards at the shop and you can also get show details online.  April 18th - 22nd, Shared Stitches is participating in the 2012 Quilt Rush with 14 other shops in N. California! This year we have chosen the theme 'A Tiskit, A Tasket ....' Every shop will feature their very own basket design and fabric pack. Collect all blocks and make your own Quilt Rush quilt. Participants visiting every shop in the hop are eligible to win great prizes when they turn in their completed passport. Go to  www.quiltrush.org  for details. Lastly, mark your calendars for the time span March 24th - April 2nd when we will celebrate our very own March Madness! Details in future newsletters and on our web page.

In honor of the Martin Luther King holiday this coming Monday, we are offering 25% off* one item and 15% off* Storewide between Friday, January 13th and Monday, January 16th.
