Greetings!

After a winter hiatus, you'll notice our newsletter comes to you with a brand new look! We're excited to show off our new logo here first! Located in the top left corner, our logo represents all the beauty and excitement our park has to offer. But that's just the beginning. We have a few other surprises in store for the coming weeks as well.

It's been a harsh winter season. Our last newsletter came to you on the eve of the most destructive snowstorm for this area in recent history and it seems there's been little normalcy since. A persistent winter weather pattern has kept the park at least partially snow-covered nearly every day since mid-December. But now, even though more snowflakes are falling today, the beginning of March signals the turn of a corner toward spring. And that means we're preparing for a wonderful new season.

I hope this finds you well, and I hope you're as excited about the coming weeks as we are.

With Warm Regards,

Matthew O'Quinn
Superintendent

Breaks Park Unveils New LogoEmployees Receive Police Training

Some exciting updates at Breaks Park will greet visitors as the park prepares for opening day--April 1.

A new logo is the first of those of those updates to be released.

"The park has never had a logo in the true sense of the word," said Marketing Director Jenny O'Quinn, "This was an opportunity to create a visual message to represent the park everywhere it's shown. The great thing is that it's conveying a bright, positive message even when no words accompany it," she added.

The logo, featuring the state flowers of Kentucky and Virginia--the goldenrod and the dogwood--showcases colors found in nature. It is accompanied with a tagline that reads "Across two states. One blissful state of mind."

The modern, clean design is fresh and positive. "It's very welcoming," noted O'Quinn, "In essence, the park belongs to everyone and we want all our visitors to feel that sense of home and belonging. This logo helps get that message across. In addition, it will work toward increasing name recognition across a broader geographic area," she said.

The next update will be a brand new website, which will go online in the near future, followed by a new brochure, leaving still a few surprises in store for the upcoming season, noted O'Quinn.

When a destructive winter storm struck the area December 18, tens of thousands of residents in southeast Kentucky and southwest Virginia were without power, including Breaks Park.

Utility crews from many states had been sent to the area to work to restore power, but many were driving up to three hours one way to work areas due to the limited accommodations in the immediate area. Once power was restored to the park, more than 200 utility workers were housed and fed until all the lights were back on across the area.

It was no easy task to take on such a job, said Superintendent Matthew O'Quinn. "Our employees were without power, many were without phones, and some were even without water. They had  difficult situations at their own homes. They really stepped up at a critical time," he said. Providing services to these workers made it easier for them to complete their jobs at a quicker pace, and really expedited the return of electricity to everyone, he noted.

Park employees didn't just offer utility crews with lodging and food, however. They were also able to offer much needed laundry service and shuttle service for those workers for a total of about two weeks.

Minimal Tree Damage Incurred to Main Park Area

Given the level of destruction of trees across the area, many have worried about the condition of the park. Fortunately, there were few downed trees in the main areas of the park, although the trails haven't yet been fully assessed due to the persistent snowfall.
