Mountaintop Lights start November 27

Greetings!

With the beginning of November, we begin to shift our focus toward the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. For nine years, the Breaks Park has celebrated the season with our Mountaintop Lights, beginning in November. Our maintenance crews have already been working on preparations for this year's beautiful display of lights. This season, budget reductions and rising electrical costs have forced us to limit the number of lights, but taking the economy into consideration, we've also taken away the entrance fee. Viewing the lights will be 100% free to the public!

Something else that brings me joy this fall is the creation of a new boy scout troop, charted by our park. Official recruiting for the Breaks Park Troop 750 began this week. As an Eagle Scout myself, I see so many benefits to having boys involved in this exceptional program. The park and scouting is a perfect fit, and I believe it will be a wonderful opportunity for all who participate.

Have a great week!
.
Sincerely,

Matthew O'Quinn

For many years the Breaks Interstate Park has provided scouts in the Breaks District of the Seqoyah Council with a location for their annual fall and spring camporees. This year, a scout group from the Bluegrass Council also held their fall camporee inside the park. But now, the park will be able to be a part of scouting in a new way, as recruiting began this week for the newly chartered Breaks Park Troop 750. The park commission voted in the spring to become a charter organization for boy scouts, allowing the formation of a troop.

"As someone who has been involved in scouting in some aspect for most of my life, I think this is just wonderul," said Park Superintendent Matthew O'Quinn. "I learned and grew so much because of the scouting program, and being able to bring that to more kids is very exciting," he said.

The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation's largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.

For nearly a century, the BSA has combined educational activities and lifelong values with fun as a means to build leadership and strength of character among its participants. The keystone belief of the BSA is that helping youth is imperative to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.

For nine holiday seasons, Breaks Interstate Park has been adorned with beautiful Christmas lights. This year, the fun will begin on the Friday after Thanksgiving. A reduction in state budgets and rising electrical costs will mean fewer lights on display, but it's still guaranteed to be beautiful. Though we're disappointed not to offer the number of lights you've seen in the past, viewing them will be absolutely free. We know you'll enjoy it!
