Greetings!

Although Labor Day marks the traditional end of summer, for us it simply means a change in focus. As the sweltering days become crisp, we look forward to seeing splashes of reds and yellows across our mountains. We begin to gear up for whitewater season in October, and plan for our annual Molasses stir-off, and the Homemaking in the Mountains event. This year, a special geocaching event is also scheduled in October.

But before all those things are upon us, we still have some warm weather left to enjoy! Don't miss the opportunity to try out our new lakefront cabins. Each cabin has gas logs, so if the nights are cool, turn on the fireplace and cozy up on the sofa.

The campground will remain open until November 1. Pedal Boats will be open on weekends through November 1 as well. Besides that, there's no better time of year to plan a hiking expedition or a mountain bike outing. This is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors without all the heat.

Take an opportunity to wind down from the busy summer. We look forward to seeing you soon.

With warm regards,

Matthew O'Quinn
Superintendent
Think green!Park to implement eco-friendly housekeeping program

More than ever before, it's important that we each take steps to help preserve our environment. Earlier this summer, we challenged our employees to trim their energy usage. Now we're going to go a step further, giving visitors the opportunity to join us in our efforts.

Our new Green Housekeeping program will launch next week, giving park guests a choice of when to have their towels and linens replenished. "At home, many people use a towel more than once," said Superintendent Matthew O'Quinn, "It conserves both energy and water when someone chooses to wait that extra day."

Guests will find fliers in their rooms with information detailing the program--any towels or linens left on the floor will be replaced; any hanging on the racks will be left for another use. Additionally, guests are encouraged to practice other eco-friendly behaviors. Did you know that simply turning the water off while you brush your teeth could save up to 25 gallons of water per month? Even small changes add up to sizable results.

"We hope everyone will share in our efforts to become a more environmentally friendly park," said O'Quinn, "and we also hope they can take some of those ideas into their own homes. All changes--even small ones--really do count," he added. For simple ways to conserve water at home, visit http://www.wateruseitwisely.com/100-ways-to-conserve/index.php
Employees Receive Police TrainingBreaks Park employees receive police training

Employees at Breaks Interstate Park were recently sworn in as Special Conservators of the Peace by Circuit Court Judge Henry Vanover, giving them full police powers within the park. Each of the men completed the required training in June to become Special Conservators of the Peace.

Training was conducted by the Commonwealth Criminal Justice Training Academy, based in Fredricksburg, Virginia. It included 40 hours of instruction in the areas of firearms; defensive tactics; officer survival; criminal law; search and seizure; rules of arrest; laws of evidence; and criminal procedure.

Beautiful fall foliage in store!Spectacular fall foliage anticipated

With Autumn on our heels, we have already seen the bright greens of spring darken to a more muted color, both on the mountainsides and beneath our feet. But that must occur before we can get a glimpse of the beautiful, bright color palette to come.

This year, we're expecting a wonderful display of fall foliage color at Breaks Park. With a good amount of late summer rainfall and an abundance of cool days, conditions appear to be just right for beautiful reds, oranges, and yellows. Breaks Park usually sees peak color around the third week of October. Come see the splendor this fall. For reservations in our cabins, cottages, or motel, call 276-865-4413.
Geocaching event plannedGeocaching event planned for October

Geocachers will be excited to learn about a great night event with camping planned at the Breaks Park October 2-3. With a base camp in the overflow campground area, geocachers will have an opportunity to scout some of the 60+ caches hidden in and around the park. However, the highlight of the event will be after the sun sets when cachers will set out to find a night cache. Fun activities are planned throughout the evening. Camp set-up will begin Friday afternoon and activities will continue until 11 pm. In the coming days, check out www.geocaching.com for more information about this event or to learn more about geocaching.
