Greetings!

Thank you for reading this edition of News & Review.

In this issue, you will soon discover why the EARTH DAY 2010 Electronics Recycling Drive was needed in the Kirkwood area.  Simply check out the recap below and see the pictures!

Also in this issue, you can learn a little about 3-D TV for the average person.  Plus, if you are renovating your home, you must read our 'Renovate Responsibly' section, which includes important information about lead paint and the people you hire to work on your home.

Thank you for your time and happy reading!
Renovate Responsibly
What to know when renovating or remodeling your home

If your home was built before 1978 and you are planning to renovate or remodel your home, please keep reading!

According to a law passed in 2008 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), anyone performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes built before 1978 must carry a special certification that demonstrates they follow lead-safe practices.  Only contractors that have gone through a specific training course are considered 'certified'.

Integration Controls has gone through the measures to become certified and we hope - and expect - that our competition has done the same.  Here's why (from the EPA's website):

  • Lead exposure can harm infants before they are born.  Disturbing lead-based paint in homes with pregnant mothers increases the risks of lead-exposure.  Lead exposure in children is more dangerous because:
    • Children's bodies absorb more lead, faster than adults.
    • The effect of lead on developing brains and nervous systems is detrimental, including behavior, learning and hearing problems, headaches, and slowed growth overall. (Click here for more from WebMD
  • Lead exposure can come in the form of breathing or swallowing lead dust, or by eating soil or paint ships containing lead.
    • Babies and young children often mouth their hands and other objects which may become contaminated by lead-based paint dust during the renovation process.
  • Removing lead-based paint improperly can increase lead-exposure dangers to your entire family.
    • In adults, exposure may result in reproductive problems (in both men and women), high blood pressure and hypertension, nerve disorders, memory and concentration problems, and muscle and joint pain.

If your home was built after 1978, the odds are that your house is in good shape and the concern for lead-based paint disturbance when renovating or remodeling is minimal.  That said, wouldn't you prefer to hire a company who has gone the extra mile to ensure health safety in ALL homes?

EARTH DAY 2010:
 Electronics Recycling Drive Event Recap

We did it!  With the help of our community, the wonderful students and faculty at Kirkwood High School, and a total of 125 amazing volunteers, we surpassed last year's collection and helped to save TONS (literally) of electronics from a landfill.

While the line started at 7:45 a.m., the collection began at 9 a.m. and lasted only seven hours.  In that short timeframe, we:
  • FILLED 16 tractor trailers with electronics, appliances, lawn mowers, batteries, broken toys, treadmills, and more!
  • PROCESSED 1,737 cars driving through and donating electronics.
  • COLLECTED 225 TONS of electronics and appliances once bound for the trash pile.  That's 450,000 pounds of stuff!
We hope and plan to continue working with Kirkwood High School, Web Innovations and Technology Services, and the great people at Kirkwood City Hall, Police, and Fire Departments to keep this event local to the area.  As soon as next year's date is announced, mark your calendars and if interested, sign up to volunteer!  Thanks again to everyone who came out to donate or volunteer - to those who helped organize - and to our sponsors (see sidebar at left) who helped keep this event FREE to everyone!

Volunteers take a breather and Integration Controls recycles.

Recent box office hits have spurred the idea of bringing 3-D TV into one's home for a similar, in-the-movie experience.  But, before you go out and purchase a 3-D TV set, you may want to wait a while.  Why?

For one, not a lot of content is currently available in 3-D.  With the exception of a few movies, the new 3-D is still, well... 'new'.  Broadcast television has no 3-D content, however, some networks are scheduled to premier 3-D channels this year (likely with a higher subscription cost).

3-d glassesYes, you will need the silly glasses.  While much better than the red and blue cellophane cardboard types, special battery-powered glasses are needed - and are often brand-specific.  A Samsung TV may not work with LG glasses, or vice versa.

Your eyes may simply not be compatible with 3-D viewing.  If you have strabismus (where your eyes don't align when focusing) or amblyopia (one eye loses detail ability), 3-D TV may be a sunk cost for you.

So - we suggest waiting for a few months and going to the movies first to ensure you can see the 3-D experience.  If you can see it - love the in-the-movie experience, and are planning on buying a new TV set anyway, then a new 3-D TV is right for you.  Give us a call and we'll help guide your purchase, with quality installation and an all-in-one remote to make your movie experience easily enjoyable.
