What Colors Mean

Business colors can be subtle communicators. Did you ever notice that many banks have blue or green in their logos? Why would UPS use brown as its main color? Read on to find the hidden messages and how we interpret them.

Cool Colors

Cool colors, like blue and green, convey a sense of calm. They appear smaller than warm colors, and visually recede on the page. Blue represents water, the sky, and is a universal color. When a group of people are deciding on a color, the consensus is most often a shade of blue. It conveys importance and confidence, and is associated with stability, unity, and conservatism. Green represents plant-life, trees, and grass, and is restful. It conveys balance, harmony, and stability.

Warm Colors

Warm colors, like red and orange, convey a sense of excitement. They appear larger than cool colors, so they can be used in smaller amounts and still make a statement. Red is a hot, strong color, and increases rate of respiration and blood pressure. Many countries use red in their flags. It conveys power, danger, emergency, and suggests speed and taking action. Yellow represents sunshine, and is a good companion color. It conveys happiness and joy. It is also the first color seen on the color spectrum, which is why it is used on hazard and other warning signs for traffic. Orange is a vibrant color that is stimulating and represents citrus and good health.

Mixed Colors

Mixed colors, like purple, convey intrigue because they calm and excite. Purple, with its cool blue and warm red, represents royalty and is associated with nobility and spirituality. In its deeper tones, it conveys riches. In its lighter tones, it is romantic and delicate.

Neutral Colors

Neutral colors, like white and black, convey unity, and help to focus other colors or tone down overpowering colors. Cool neutrals are white, ivory, and gray. White goes with almost any color. It makes jewel tones (red, blue, green) look brighter and more prominent. It conveys purity and cleanliness. Ivory is a soft neutral that conveys understated elegance. Gray is a balanced neutral. It conveys storm clouds or mourning. Warm neutrals are black, brown, and beige. Black is the absence of color. It conveys mystery, sophistication, and elegance. It works well with jewel tones. Brown is a natural, down-to-earth neutral. It represents wholesomeness, dependability, simplicity, and honesty. Beige is a calm neutral that conveys the warmth of brown and crisp coolness of white.

What do your business colors reflect?

Trivia

Since it's an Olympic year, here's a little color trivia:

Each of the five Olympic rings represents a color in every national flag in the world.

Networking Tip

Building Relationships

The goal of networking is to build mutually beneficial relationships. One way to start is to invite new contacts to meet for coffee to find out more about their businesses. In your conversation, be sure to ask key questions about their focus and ideal clients, so you can provide the best referrals.

Don't forget to share the same information about your business!
