The Good
Shepherd
by: Pastor Tony Haglund, Canton Lutheran Church
"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want" begins the writer in our beloved 23rd Psalm. The claim is powerful because it expresses a longing that is at the heart of the conflict of most people's souls. You see, we would rather be led than have to lead. We would rather be cared for than have to be the care taker. And yet, our experience in life is that we have to be in charge. Our experience in life is that if we don't take care of things who will?"
And so the psalmist gives voice to our deepest longing, that we could somehow find the faith to see that God is our shepherd and because God is in charge of our lives and this world, we need not be in want...in other words, we need not be anxious or fearful.
Can this really happen for us or is this just one more religious platitude, pie-in-the-sky Utopian wish that will never really be true this side of heaven? I suppose there's only one way to find out...place your trust in God and we'll see.
