"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?" "Come my heart says, 'seek his face!'" - Psalm 27:1a, 8a
Over the holidays, we did a little bit of traveling which required that we stayed in a variety of guest rooms and motels. I'm not a very good sleeper and most nights find myself waking up once or twice in the middle of the night. Because we were in so many different places in such a short amount of time, I often found myself disoriented and confused when I woke up. (OK, time to make jokes about me always being disoriented and confused).
Whenever this happened, the first thing I would do is look for some sort of light. Because I was in a new place, I didn't know my way around but if I could just find some light, I was able to orient myself.
Today, marks the beginning of Epiphany, the Season of Light. This is the time in the church year when we ask ourselves what it means to call Jesus, the Light of the World? This is also the time when we ask ourselves what the light of Jesus looks like so that when we find ourselves disoriented and confused, we might seek the true light that promises to lead us out of the darkness into his life and love.
