Greetings!

We put out this weekly devotion and newsletter to keep members and friends of our congregation up-to-date on current happenings.  If you know of someone who might like this information, please forward this to them and encourage them to join our mailing list.  Its easy and its free.    This week's devotion is written for us by Rev. Mark Groves, a mission developer in Sergeant Bluff, IA and a dear friend.  God bless and we hope to see you on Sunday.

This Week's Devotion Compassionate Jesus

Light
by Pastor Mark Groves

Give me your eyes for just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me your love for humanity
Give me your arms for the broken hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see

-Brandon Heath - Give Me Your Eyes

Recently while traveling I stumbled across a song on my iPod that's been there a while.  I downloaded it because my son suggested that it was a song I might like and though I've listened to it before, for some reason this time something was so compelling about the lyrics, especially the refrain, that I found myself listening to it again and again,  through most of three different flights and three different airports.

The songwriter gets us to speak a desire to take on the physical attributes of Jesus; his eyes, arms and heart, that we might be able to see, touch and feel the broken of this world through His love for humanity, especially for those who feel empty, lost and alone.  After listening to the song awhile I wondered why we're not able to see, touch and feel these people already.  Of course the answer is, we're the ones who are broken, and we're not able to see this because we're often blinded by our own ego.

Ego literally means "the I" or "I myself," and without getting into a long psychological definition, it simply is that part of our thinking that makes us believe that we're distinctive, or different from others.  This grade of ego leads us to an exaggerated sense of self-importance.  We begin to believe that it is by our own power and strength that we are able to sustain our lives and everything in it.

The problem with this thinking is that it leads us away from community, which is how God intended for us to live and how God is revealed to us; through love for one another.  So, our ego leads us away from God, away from His light and towards the darkness.

A friend of mine recently said, "The ego is the pathway for darkness into our hearts."  He was right.  But how do we change this thinking?  How do we move toward Light in our lives?

When we make our relationship with Jesus the priority of our lives, we begin to see with new eyes, we reach out with new arms and we love with a new heart.  It is then that we awakened to the Truth.  That God, who is the Creator of all things, has been watching us, holding us and loving us all along.  And with this awakening, our lives become filled with abundance, we find our purpose and we are no longer alone.  We live in the Light.
What's Happening at the Church

2nd Week of WOW! Tonight!
WOW! (Worship on Wednesdays) happens again tonight, Sept. 2nd at 7:00 p.m.  Bring your neighbors, friends and family and join us on Wednesday's each week for an upbeat, contemporary and relevant worship service that will make you say; "WOW!  That was a fun way of worshiping."  Sermons are drafted from the previous Sunday's message and each service includes a kid's message, Holy Communion and a promise that we'll try not to go any longer than 45 minutes so that you can bring the kids and still get them in bed at a reasonable time.
Gospel Choir Starts Back Up
The Adult Gospel Choir will begin rehearsals again, tonight, Sept. 2nd at 7:00 p.m.  Rehearsals this year will be in the chapel.  Always looking for new voices so come and join us.
Get the Kids Signed Up
If you haven't already done so, please make it a priority to get your kids signed up for either Sunday School or Wednesday School.  We are still recruiting teachers and assistants so sign up the kids and while you're at it, let us know how you can lend us a helping hand.

Also, sign ups are now beginning for ROCK (Radically Outrageous Christian Kids) a new Wednesday after school program that includes opportunities for learning, fun and music.  See our September newsletter for the sign up form or stop into the church offices.
