Life According to Gilda Radner
by Pastor Tony Haglund

"I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next." - Gilda Radner, actor

Do you remember Gilda Radner from the early years of Saturday Night Live?  Radner died in 1989 at the age of 42 from ovarian cancer.  She had struggled with the disease for quite a few years before her death and was in a time of remission when she wrote the book "Its Always Something" from which the above quote was taken.  The title comes from one of Radner's most famous Saturday Night Live characters Roseanne Roseannadanna who would often quote an imaginary elderly relative saying "It just goes to show ya...it's always something!  If it's not one thing, it's another."

Life in a nutshell, don't you think?  It's always something!  Just when we think we see the light of day, something happens.  Life is never easy - at least not for very long.  Accidents, illnesses, broken relationships, disappointments, unexpected expenses...if it's not one thing, it's another.

Gilda Radner's life was never easy.  Like most of us, her life was a combination of good and bad, blessing and curse.  Yet at the end, the greatest lesson she had learned was to embrace the messiness.  She learned that the future set before us is yet unwritten and that there can be peace and serenity found in embracing the unknown and chaotic.

There's an old song with the refrain "We don't what tomorrow holds but we know who holds tomorrow."  The cross and the empty tomb declare this good news.  Even in the midst of messiness.  Even in the midst of the unknown.  Even in the midst of death, God holds tomorrow and promises that no matter what today holds for us, tomorrow the stone will be rolled away and we will again know life.
What's Happening at the Church

We Need Your Help
We are looking for people that can help us get communion ready, refill our oil candles and make sure the small details of worship are attended to each week.  This is the important work of the Altar Guild and we are in need of people interested in this important ministry.  Most Altar Guild members serve during 2 months of the whole year so the time committment isn't huge and people that are a part of this ministry know they are engaging in work that really matters.  If you're interested, e-mail Brenda Heggen at rbheggen@iw.net
Time and Talents
August is Time and Talents month at CLC.  Look in your August newsletter for our new and simplified Time and Talent form.  We need EVERYONE to fill this out so get yours done today so that together we can start planning for ministry.
Church in the Park
This Sunday, Aug. 16th we will be worshiping at Jack Fox Park on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.  This will take the place of our regular worship service.  We hope everyone will make a special effort to join us as we recognize and celebrate the many members who have joined us during the past 3 years.  We won't have seating so bring a lawn chair or blanket.  And while you're at it, how about bringing a neighbor or a friend as well.
Worship on Wednesday (WOW)
Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 26th at 7:00 p.m., Canton Lutheran Church will be adding a Wednesday evening service.  This worship experience will be fairly informal, last about 45 minutes and will always include Holy Communion.  Wednesday education for our kids will begin on Sept. 16th.
