NYHS Family Shabbat and Conferences: A Recap
by Rabbi Benjy Owen
It has already been two weeks since our very successful NYHS Family Shabbat Dinner held on November 18th at Congregation Ezra Bessaroth. We had a great attendance - well over 160 parents, students, teachers, board members and community leaders spent a Shabbat evening together eating, socializing, hearing divrei Torah and watching a funny student skit. Thank you to Dalia Amon and all of the dedicated volunteers who arranged this annual program. Thank you also to Michelle Haston who coordinated the evening's program.
Last week, we held our Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences. We are so happy that over 85% of families participated in the program!
This year, we made two changes to the program. First, we changed the method of registration. We asked parents and students to use Sign-Up Genius to register the times of their conferences. In return for their effort, parents had more flexibility to tailor the conference times to their preferences. Second, we invited students to participate in the conferences. We thought that by not inviting the students to participate , we would be missing an opportunity for students to take an active role in their own learning. By including students, we reinforce the correct message that high school learning is a partnership between students, teachers and parents.
I welcome your feedback regarding these changes. Please contact me at rowen@nyhs.net
Shabbat shalom.

Basketball Season Begins at NYHS
by Grace Almo 2013
Basketball 2011-2012 has begun! Our men and women's teams started practicing early on in November for two straight weeks. After conditioning, strategizing, and gearing up, our teams were ready to have some fun on Saturday Night, November 26th at our annual Jamboree. The Jamboree is a fun event to kick off the season. Students, parents, teachers, and alumni flooded into our home gym at Seattle Hebrew Academy. Both men and women teams played two short ten minute games against North Sound and Tacoma Baptist schools.
The women played first against North Sound. The women's team consists of ten fabulous players this year, and are led by Captain Julia Owen #25, senior. With a new warm-up music playlist, and a great amount of energy, the women were ready to play. They played tough defense as they started to run a new press. The women were victorious over North Sound with the final score of 25-10. The next game against Tacoma Baptist was more of a challenge for the women. While they played tough defense, it still needed some improvement. The women stayed as a team, but made some mistakes, which caused them to lose to a close game with the final score of 18-14. Overall, the women had fun and had a good experience for their first time out on the court this year.
Then, the men took the court. The boy's team this year has nineteen players, with an impressive amount of underclassmen. Captains Caleb Angel-junior, and Jacob Hanan-senior led the men's team. Due to the number of students, we have a Junior Varsity, and a Varsity team this year for the men. In their first game against Tacoma Baptist, our men played hard and tried to keep their game up, but after all it was their first time out on the court this season. The men were not victorious, with the final score of 18-6.
In their next short game, the men played hard throughout the entire game against North Sound. It was close the entire time until the last few seconds when Jacob Hanan scored two points to seal the victory, with the final score of 11-14.
The jamboree was a great success and both of our teams won a game and played hard, and most importantly had fun!
On Tuesday, our teams ventured to Marysville to play Grace Academy.
The Men's Junior Varsity was first. Our team tried very hard, but lost the game.
Then the women played and came out a little bit flat, but picked up their momentum in the second quarter. The women played tough as they picked off the ball, got many steals, and played tough defense. The defense caused the other team to make mistakes, which led to us picking off the ball, and passing it to senior Milana Davydov at the end of the court to finish off the fast break, Milana scored 28 points that night. The girl's final score was 61-38! The women put the game away and started the season off well.
The men took the court and started off very well! We were up by about fifteen points, until Grace Academy caught up. During the fourth quarter, we were up by a few points, until one of our players accidentally traveled, which caused the other team to get the ball and make a basket. The game went into overtime! After mistakes on both teams, we lost 39-41. The men tried hard, but sadly were not able to put the game away.
On Wednesday night, both our teams played Tulalip Heritage at SHA. The girl's team has not beaten Tulalip at home since 2003! That was the night that that fact was going to change, also the women had extra incentive because it was team captain Julia Owen's birthday, and a win would sure be a great birthday present. The women prepared all day by joining each other at lunch for birthday cake and discussing game tactics. When they got on they court, they were ready to play. The entire game, defense was AMAZING. Every time a member from the other team had the ball, one of our players was right in their face. Julia Owen scored 17, Milana Davydov scored 16, and Ilana Greenberg scored 15. We had great fast breaks, one of which Grace Almo was waiting down court with a fantastic assist by Julia Owen. Coach Jed Davis screamed out, "That was world class!" After playing hard, the women put the game away yet again with a final score of 66-44. The women's team is 2-0 and ready to continue the season with great excitement and State in mind!
The men played hard too. Freshman Asher Young played a great game with 6 points, and so did Caleb Angel with 8 points. Our men played good defense, but sadly Tulalip out hustled and played them well. The final score was 22-52.
On Thursday night, the women did not have a game; however the men did at Muckleshoot Tribal School. Our Varsity team tried to stay close in score as Josh Frieldand, sophomore scored 14 points, and Jacob Hanan scored 10. The Muckleshoot men played a tough and physical game, as there were many foul calls. After a tough game, we lost, as the final score was 41-69.
Overall, our teams are off to a good start! The women are doing phenomenally are currently undefeated! The men play hard, and hopefully will be doing better in the upcoming games.
Come support us! Upcoming games:
12/5 Away Game at Bishop Blanchet Women 5:00 PM
12/7 Away Game at Holy Names Women 3:30 PM
12/7 Home Game JV Men 6:00 PM, Varity 7:30 PM
