Four Students to represent NYHS at the
AIPAC Schusterman Advocacy Institute High School Summit in Washington D.C.

Earlier this year, the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) invited NYHS to nominate up to four students to participate in their upcoming AIPAC Schusterman Advocacy Institute High School Summit on November 6-8, 2011 in Alexandra, VA. This weekend, Josh Appelbaum 2012, Grace Almo 2013, Talia Etskeson 2013 and Halle Friedland 2013 will be representing NYHS at the conference. Also, Jessica Schwartz 2013 will be attending as a representative of USY.
The 2011 Schusterman Advocacy Institute High School Summit will bring together 400 students from select Jewish Day Schools, synagogue youth groups, and teen leadership organizations nationwide that are committed to supporting the US-Israel relationship through involvement in the American political process. Throughout the High School Summit, AIPAC aims to provide your students with the most advanced political training available, so that they can be more effective activists for a strong US-Israel relationship.
Nominated students are only responsible for airfare and travel to and from the hotel. All conference expenses including lodging and food are being paid by AIPAC.
All NYHS students were invited to apply. To apply, students wrote an essay in response to the following questions:
1) What is the value of the relationship between America and Israel?
2) What can you do to affect this relationship?
The essays were judged blind by a panel that included administrators, teachers and a board member.
We look forward to hearing about the students' experience in next week's E-Bulletin.

| An Exciting Week for NYHS Women's Volleyball!
by Milana Davydova 2012
SPORTS RECAP
Congratulations to the 613s volleyball team who qualified for the state tournament in volleyball after their victory over Shorewood Christian! A special thanks to our dedicated and committed seniors Makena Owens, Ilana Greenberg, Dena Phillips, and Jennifer Mendoza, who have all helped the volleyball team get to this point with your outstanding leadership and close teamwork! Senior Makena Owens (2012) says "We're so excited we got to this point. It took a lot of hard work and commitment from everyone but it is totally worth it." We are so proud of all of your accomplishments and can't wait to see how far you will get.
On Friday the juniors and seniors visited the National College Fair at the Washington State Convention Center in Downtown Seattle. This was a prime opportunity for the upperclassmen to get a chance to explore college options and chat with various college representatives throughout the country. This gave students the chance to learn about schools they are interested in by directly getting in touch with admissions officers, alumni, and other officials. Junior Raymond Levy (2013) says "I definitely learned a lot more about schools than I would have just be visiting their web sites." The college fair also provided students with information and workshops about financial aid, campus life, school spirit, and various other aspects of the college experience. It is safe to say that the experience was an all round positive one for the students that attended. Hopefully this experience will fuel the seniors' application process, and will make the juniors think about their future college plans.
Have a restful weekend, and a wonderful Shabbat!
Shabbat Shalom!

Send them to Melissa Rivkin at mrivkin@nyhs.netCheck out Aaron Katsman's most recent article on investing: Looking for Retirement Income? Look at International Stocks Ashley Cohen 2011 Ashley Cohen was in town over the holidays and stopped in for a visit. Ashley is in the undergraduate College of Nursing at New York University. This semester she is taking Chemistry, Childhood Brain Development, Sociology and Writing. She feels very prepared for college and the course load and attributes her ease in the transition from high school to college to the skills she learned at NYHS. Ashley loves the vibrant life both on and off campus in New York. She is active in the campus Hillel and says that Jewish life on campus is both vibrant and readily available with access to plenty of kosher food, Orthodox and every kind of services and learning and plenty of Jewish clubs and student activities.

_____________________________________ Mushky Notik 2008 with Elana Hasson 2014 Mushky Notik 2008 is currently a senior at the University of Washington and will be graduating this spring from the School of Nursing with a BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing) degree. After graduation, she plans to take her boards to get licensed as a RN (Registered Nurse). She's been on the Dean's list every quarter at UW and was on the annual Dean's list for the nursing school. She spends her school breaks in NY visiting her siblings and adorable niece and nephews. Upon graduation, her big plan is to move to NY and find a job as a nurse. After she works as a nurse and gets experience in the field, she will strongly consider the option of going on to get her Master's in nursing to become a nurse practitioner. She has played basketball with other Yeshiva alumni on intramural teams at UW and loves seeing them around campus.

Gabi Feuer 2001 Gabi Feuer graduated from NYHS in 2001 and studied at Yeshiva B'nai Torah in Far Rockaway. He then entered Touro College and earned a BS in Management and Marketing. While at Touro College and Yeshiva B'nai Torah Gabi was enlisted by a local family to teach their three middle school children general studies to complement their home schooling. For the past four years, Gabi has been living in New York City and is a Senior Mortgage Consultant at Universal Mortgage. Gabi says, "I have fond memories of Yeshiva and value the education I received. I am grateful for both the Judaic and General Studies programs at the Yeshiva that truly prepared me not just for college, but for life as an adult. The ability to think critically, organize my thoughts logically and categorically are skill that I use daily in my business and personal life. Without these tools I would not be where I am today."

Zelle Rettman 2010

I am now a sophomore at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. I'm keeping EXTREMELY busy. I am taking four classes this semester: True Crime in American Culture, Directed Writing: Short Fiction, Classic Hollywood Cinema, and Indian Film: The Three Hour Dream. Aside from classes I am involved in a bunch of clubs, and I have a job that I love. I have joined STAR, an acronym for the club Students Talking About Relationships. It is a one-on-one peer counseling group that deals with relationships ranging from parents and romantic partners to food and music - a relationship is whatever you have a relationship with. I have been trained in many difficult subjects including suicides, eating disorders, domestic violence and sexual abuse in order to provide the best help to whomever comes during my office hours, which are held for 2.5 hours per week. Aside from STAR I am involved with BTV (Brandeis Television) club, and BZA (Brandeis Zionist Alliance). BTV has its own channel on cable TV to broadcast the films and shows that it creates. It is granted funds to bring in prominent speakers, pay actors and actresses, and purchase the necessary equipment to carry out projects, many of which are sent to film festivals and competitions. BZA, is one of the pro-Israel groups on campus. I, together with a friend, have been designated the group video specialist. We film all the events and create promo videos for BZA, Brandeis and Israel. In addition to classes and clubs I work in the Library at the Getz Media Lab as a software and equipment specialist. The lab has 25 computers for people to work with media programs such as Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro and Photoshop. We also are trained in using camera and recording equipment that are available for rent and we teach people how to use the equipment. I have also recently been accepted to be a tour guide on campus and will begin training shortly. Recently I declared my major to be Film and soon I will be looking to declare a minor in English (maybe a double major, who knows!). At the same time as I was declaring my Film major, I received an email of acceptance into the David Project's Israel Advocacy Film Seminar that will take place mid November in Baltimore. This past summer I participated in Brandeis's JBS Film Summer Program in which we spent two months learning the art of script writing, film editing and film production, and making numerous short films. In the middle of October intramural volleyball will start and I am part of a team including two friends from NYHS: Shoshana Goldberg 2010 and Marina Garkavi 2009. I am really looking forward to playing volleyball again - after four years of playing at NYHS and three before that at SHA, I am need of a volleyball fill. In short, I'm busy and I am loving it! |
