Gilad Shalit - Coming Home
From the blog post of alumna Jamie Schwarzt 2011

Jamie Schwartz and Karen Franke
Jamie is at Hebrew University on the Nativ Leadership program. She will enter the UW next fall. She is pictured with Karen Franke above.

Gilad Shalit is an Israel solider who was kidnapped in Gaza over five years ago and has been held captive ever since. This summer, I worked at the Mercer Island JCC camp as the Judaics educator and as part of our Israel week I had the kids write letters to Gilad's parents. Three weeks ago Julia Snyder and I walked to the Gilad Shalit tent (that sits outside of the prime minister's house) to drop the letters off and instead of finding a box to leave them in we found his parents accompanied by a group of visitors.

NYHS at Northwest Harvest: An experience by Zev Behar 2012
Zev

This week in school we had an amazing chessed opportunity. We were given the pleasure of volunteering at Northwest Harvest, an organization that gives food to those in need. On arrival we were given hair nets which made some great photo opportunities, but the real reason for wearing the nets was to make sure our hair did not get into the food we were packing.

The students and teachers were split into two groups. My group was sent to the back of the warehouse where we were placed at a table overflowing with different types of mixed beans. We were handed a cup and a bunch of bags and asked to scoop two cups of beans into each bag. it may sound boring but it was actually pretty fun. At my table, Ilana Polack 2013, Elana Hasson 2014, Dov Alberstone 2014, Johnny Sassoon 2014, and Daniel Cohen 2014 kept me entertained while we worked. Dov, Johnny, and Daniel argued about various topics while Elana, Ilana, and I listened in and enjoyed their conversation. In the end we had assembled around 3,957 pounds of bags of beans which the people at Northwest Harvest said comprised about 3,500 servings. When Northwest Harvest announced how much we had helped, all the students cheered. I think I speak for everybody in the school when I say that this trip was meaningful, fun, and rewarding.  It was also a mitzvah.  I enjoyed every moment and it felt like we were making a difference. Northwest Harvest told us that what we did in two hours usually takes about ten hours to complete and that we really made a difference that day. I'm glad to have had the experience of doing this and look forward to future school-wide chessed opportunities.

Gabi Feuer

Gabi Feuer 2001

Gabi Feuer graduated from NYHS in 2001 and studied at Yeshiva B'nai Torah in Far Rockaway.  He then entered Touro College and earned a BS in Management and Marketing. While at Touro College and Yeshiva B'nai Torah Gabi was enlisted by a local family to teach their three middle school children general studies to complement their home schooling.  For the past four years, Gabi has been living in New York City and is a Senior Mortgage Consultant at Universal Mortgage.

Gabi says, "I have fond memories of Yeshiva and value the education I received.  I am grateful for both the Judaic and General Studies programs at the Yeshiva that truly prepared me not just for college, but for life as an adult.  The ability to think critically, organize my thoughts logically and categorically are skill that I use daily in my business and personal life.  Without these tools I would not be where I am today."

Zelle Rettman 2010
Zelle

I am now a sophomore at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. I'm keeping EXTREMELY busy. I am taking four classes this semester: True Crime in American Culture, Directed Writing: Short Fiction, Classic Hollywood Cinema, and Indian Film: The Three Hour Dream. Aside from classes I am involved in a bunch of clubs, and I have a job that I love.

I have joined STAR, an acronym for the club Students Talking About Relationships. It is a one-on-one peer counseling group that deals with relationships ranging from parents and romantic partners to food and music - a relationship is whatever you have a relationship with. I have been trained in many difficult subjects including suicides, eating disorders, domestic violence and sexual abuse in order to provide the best help to whomever comes during my office hours, which are held for 2.5 hours per week.

Aside from STAR I am involved with BTV (Brandeis Television) club, and BZA (Brandeis Zionist Alliance). BTV has its own channel on cable TV to broadcast the films and shows that it creates. It is granted funds to bring in prominent speakers, pay actors and actresses, and purchase the necessary equipment to carry out projects, many of which are sent to film festivals and competitions. BZA, is one of the pro-Israel groups on campus. I, together with a friend, have been designated the group video specialist. We film all the events and create promo videos for BZA, Brandeis and Israel.

In addition to classes and clubs I work in the Library at the Getz Media Lab as a software and equipment specialist. The lab has 25 computers for people to work with media programs such as Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro and Photoshop. We also are trained in using camera and recording equipment that are available for rent and we teach people how to use the equipment. I have also recently been accepted to be a tour guide on campus and will begin training shortly.

Recently I declared my major to be Film and soon I will be looking to declare a minor in English (maybe a double major, who knows!). At the same time as I was declaring my Film major, I received an email of acceptance into the David Project's Israel Advocacy Film Seminar that will take place mid November in Baltimore.

This past summer I participated in Brandeis's JBS Film Summer Program in which we spent two months learning the art of script writing, film editing and film production, and making numerous short films.

In the middle of October intramural volleyball will start and I am part of a team including two friends from NYHS: Shoshana Goldberg 2010 and Marina Garkavi 2009. I am really looking forward to playing volleyball again - after four years of playing at NYHS and three before that at SHA, I am need of a volleyball fill.

In short, I'm busy and loving it.
