JDS 8th Graders Visit, Volleyball Victory and Cross Country Team Success by Milana Davydov 2012
This week was full of classic Yeshiva events now that school is in full swing. The Yeshiva volleyball and cross country teams participated in their first matches and there were wins and successes all across the board! Congratulations to the 613s volleyball team who won their first volleyball game against Bush earlier this week! The lady 613s battled it out in an amazing comeback after the opposition won the first two matches. Yeshiva came back and won the next three matches and put the Bush School away! Thursday night the volleyball team had a game against a 3A school - Holy Names. The JV team for Yeshiva beat Holy Names, while the varsity team fell slightly short. Thank you to everyone who came out to SHA to support our lady 613s! Congratulations to our cross country team who completed their first meet earlier this week! A special round of applause to sophomore Laurel Aaronson (2014) who finished second in Wednesdays meet against Mt. Rainier Lutheran, Shorewood Christian, and Crosspoint. Freshman Jeremy Voss (2015) finished seventh. Also a כל הכבוד to Seniors Andrew Orenstein (2012) and Binny Greene (2012) who placed eleventh and twenty second, respectively. We are very excited to see how far the cross country team will go this year! On Wednesday, the eighth grade students from the Jewish Day School came to visit NYHS. This gave JDS students an early glance at what it's like to be in high school, and showed them how the Yeshiva is different from other high schools. They got to visit both Judaic and College Prep classes, and also participated in a pizza lunch with various JDS alumni like me who spoke about their high school experience after graduating JDS. The lunch was finished off by a question and answer session where there was an open panel of discussion for specific questions such as homework, sports teams, and student-teacher relationships. Overall, this was a positive experience for the JDSers and we hope to see them on campus next year! Next week is Rosh Hashanah and students will be off school to celebrate the Jewish New Year with their families. May we all have a שנה טובה ומתוקה! Have a restful weekend and a wonderful Shabbat! Shabbat Shalom!
Makena Owens 2012 and Elyse Behar 2014 with Ms. Nance Adler, their beloved JDS teacher this week on campus (both Elyse and Makena are JDS alumni) |

Shani Rosenbaum 2007 just started her senior year at Brandeis. She writes:
Jennifer Mendoza and Shani Rosenbaum 2007 last year when Shani visited NYHS
"I've been back at Brandeis for about a week now and am starting what looks like will be a phenomenal senior year. I'm an RA for a first-year dorm here called a Common Cause Community - my residents all applied to be on this hall so they can volunteer together running after-school programs for local disadvantaged kids and do other types of service learning together. I'm excited to be involved in shaping this wonderful community of sweet, socially-conscious young adults."

Shani is a Sorenson Fellow at Brandeis and as part of her fellowship training, she spent the summer in Israel working with migrant workers and to eliminate human trafficking. Here are two excerpts from the Brandeis International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life. Shani Rosenbaum '12 is majoring in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies and minoring in Creative Writing at Brandeis. Her interest in the intersection of Judaism and social justice led her to an internship last summer at Jerusalem-based Bema'aglei Tzedek, a Jewish-inspired social justice non-profit organization. There she became familiar with some of the salient social problems in Israel today, including the struggles of migrant workers and asylum seekers. Driven by the Biblical imperative to seek justice for society's most vulnerable, Shani interned with the Hotline for Migrant Workers in Tel Aviv, a non-profit devoted to promoting the rights of migrant workers and refugees and eliminating human trafficking in Israel. Here is an excerpt from the Brandeis Shani Rosenbaum '12, worked with the Hotline for Migrant Workers in Tel Aviv, which promotes the rights of migrant workers and refugees and works to eliminate human trafficking in Israel. Shani observed, "The up-close encounter with both asylum seekers and the Israelis amongst whom they live allowed me to develop powerful connections with human beings, and helped me to think more broadly about a complex set of social issues. Returning now, I approach questions of global migration, asylum, and of Israel's Democratic and Jewish identities - and of my own identity - with a more solid foundation of nuance and experience-induced realism, as well as a heightened sense of empathy toward this vulnerable population." |
Denah Angel 2001 After graduating from NYHS in 2001, Denah Angel earned a BA in Theater Performance Arts and a Minor in Musical Theater at Marymount Manhattan College in 2005. She then moved to Los Angeles and quickly became a proud member of the Screen Actors Guild. She has had several roles in film and television including roles in The Riches, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and House as well as small roles in Made of Honor and Super Bad. In the past two years, Denah has been involved in the development of a production company called Day 10 out of 8. They recently completed a spoof on the show 24 called 00:24 which has been screened at many film festivals including itvfest. Check it out here at www.twentyfourminutes.com. Denah is also the Executive Assistant to the CEO and Director of Multi Media and Social Networking for Spectrum Group International, a Fortune 500 company that is composed of 11 international companies ranging from gold and silver trading to auction houses, which auction off rare coins, fine and rare wine and stamps. And if that isn't enough to fill her days, Denah volunteers for the Sephardic Educational Center (SEC) in LA. She has coordinated their film festival and is currently co-chairing their young professional group which holds classes, social events and develops leadership in the community for the next generation. Denah told us that she truly appreciates her NYHS education and the impact it has had on her life today. "Two of the most influential teachers in my life have been Dr. Jones and Mr. Kaufman. Dr. Jones trained us to be independent workers and thinkers. He was always there and approachable to answer questions. He would help cater to our specific needs. Through Mr. Kaufman's IDS I learned how to analyze and organize my thoughts. It is a skill that I am grateful to have learned." Denah also reminisced about the intimate atmosphere at NYHS "Because NYHS is so small you felt like an individual with a strong voice in a close community". Denah spearheaded the first Recycling Club at NYHS and a Tefilah class for beginners. She was happy to hear that both initiatives are still important endeavors at NYHS today. When in town, Denah makes sure to support her younger brother Caleb and the 613s at basketball games. "There has always been a lot of camaraderie at NYHS and it's exciting to see that Yeshiva spirit still happening! I am thankful for my experience at the Yeshiva and am a result of the great influence it has had on many young adults and professionals." |
