The First Week in Review - A Message from Rabbi Benjy Owen

What a busy week! Every day has been jam-packed!

On Monday, faculty gathered at NYHS for a very informative in-service. Ms. Nomi Winderbaum, Director of Seattle Hebrew Academy's Learning Center, made a presentation about Differentiated Instruction to our staff. Later in the program, Rabbi Fox presented conclusions from our recent NYHS parent survey and discussed some of the elements of the action plan in response to those conclusions. Some of the elements include: a new Friday Home Room program in which lead NYHS administrators will meet with each grade every Friday.

On Monday evening, we held our annual Parent Orientation. This year, we added two new elements to the program. Before the Orientation, we had a salmon dinner for all parents. Thank you to Jack DeLeon for coordinating all elements of this dinner including the catching of the salmon. We also added a presentation to parents of returning students. During this section of the program, we introduced new faculty members, presented the plan for class trips for each of our grades and learned about college counseling with Mr. Brodkin.

The next morning, we welcomed our students to the new school year. We held student orientations and assemblies, shared summer stories and connected and reconnected with new and old friends.

Thursday was the first day of the retreat. This year's retreat has three goals:

1)      To build students' student skills that will help them be successful in their classes

2)      To build connections between students and their instructors

3)      To build connections between the students themselves

After Minyan, students broke into NYHS teacher-led sessions on skills related to studying, organization, note-taking and time-management.

After these sessions, we visited the Point Defiance Park Zoo in Tacoma where students divided into groups and had a photo scavenger hunt. After the zoo, we headed to a local Tacoma park where students played soccer, football, basketball and Frisbee. We then enjoyed a delicious barbecue dinner courtesy of the Student Council and prayed Mincha before returning home on the bus. I even ran into alumnus Jacob Rosen (2005) and his mom, Liz, at the local Tacoma Safeway store!

After Minyan and breakfast, freshmen and sophomores took a hike along the Snoqualmie Valley Trail. We ended the day at Tolt McDonald Park in Carnation.  We had perfect weather for our adventure.

Juniors and seniors spent the morning at Family Fun Center playing golf, racing cars and enjoying all that the Center had to offer.

As I said, What a Week!

I wish you all a Shabbat shalom!

Welcome Back!

by Milana Davydov 2012

Milana and sister

Welcome back students, teachers, and faculty of Northwest Yeshiva High School! Welcome to our new incoming freshman class, as well as to our many transfer and out-of-town students! It is safe to say that it has been a fantastic first week of school for everyone. Although some thought that summer was too short, most can agree that seeing everyone's bright and smiling faces back at school was a nice change of pace.

The first day of school started with nerves and excitement for both new and old students. Tuesday morning was filled with lots of assemblies, announcements, orientations, and adjustments. A special thank you to Karen Franke for baking chocolate chip cookies for all of us and handing them out fresh out of the oven with glasses of milk during our first morning break. Wednesday was a regular day of school for all classes. Special thanks to Student Council and the Food Committee who planned a special Krsipy Kreme doughnut breakfast for the students! As the day went on, freshman got a taste of how fast paced high school is, the other underclassmen were reminded that they need to kick back into full gear for school, while seniors got their "senior swag" on (I'll let you parents figure out what that means!).

Thursday and Friday were the heavily anticipated Student Retreat planned by Student Council. Thursday morning, breakfast was once again served - students got to enjoy bagels, cream cheese and orange juice. The Thursday morning programming started off with seminars on note taking, study skills and time management given in small groups by various teachers. This was especially helpful for freshman and new students as they adjust to a new school. The day continued with a trip to the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma. Students rode on camels, saw polar bears and walrus, cooled off with ice cream, and enjoyed each other's company. The remainder of the day was spent at a nearby park where students and faculty got a chance to enjoy outdoor activities, a barbeque dinner, and quality bonding time.

Friday was day two of the student retreat. Underclassmen got the chance to experience a hike with Rabbi Owen, while the upperclassmen had a special trip to the Family Fun Center! Overall, there was positive feedback from all students regarding the programming on the retreat. Thank you so much to Student Council and Rabbi Margolese who worked so hard to put this wonderful event together!

We are so excited to take on week two of the school year. This first week set off the perfect tone to what the rest of the school year should be like.

Have a restful weekend, and a wonderful Shabbat!

Shabbat Shalom!

Thank yous

Thank you to Jack DeLeon, father of alumnus AJ DeLeon 2011 for chairing our Salmon Dinner for Parents this week!  Jack also caught, cleaned and filleted the salmon and had two full salmon on hand that were raffled off to new families.  The Dahans and the Solovys both won salmon!  Thank you to Jack for putting on a fun, delicious and memorable event.

Thank you to Rabbi Margolese and the Student Council led by Madame President Molly Dubow 2012 for a great start to the school year with the retreat!

Thank you to Mark and Jane Orenstein and Andrew Orenstein 2012 for hosting a wonderful back to school pizza party at their home for seniors and their families!  What a wonderful way to start the year for the Class of 2012!

Denah Angel 2001

 Denah Angel

After graduating from NYHS in 2001, Denah Angel earned a BA in Theater Performance Arts and a Minor in Musical Theater at Marymount Manhattan College in 2005.

She then moved to Los Angeles and quickly became a proud member of the Screen Actors Guild. She has had several roles in film and television including roles in The Riches, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and House as well as small roles in Made of Honor and Super Bad.

In the past two years, Denah has been involved in the development of a production company called Day 10 out of 8. They recently completed a spoof on the show 24 called 00:24 which has been screened at many film festivals including itvfest. Check it out here at  www.twentyfourminutes.com.

Denah is also the Executive Assistant to the CEO and Director of Multi Media and Social Networking for Spectrum Group International, a Fortune 500 company that is composed of 11 international companies ranging from gold and silver trading to auction houses, which auction off rare coins, fine and rare wine and stamps.

And if that isn't enough to fill her days, Denah volunteers for the Sephardic Educational Center (SEC) in LA. She has coordinated their film festival and is currently co-chairing their young professional group which holds classes, social events and develops leadership in the community for the next generation.

Denah told us that she truly appreciates her NYHS education and the impact it has had on her life today.

"Two of the most influential teachers in my life have been Dr. Jones and Mr. Kaufman. Dr. Jones trained us to be independent workers and thinkers. He was always there and approachable to answer questions. He would help cater to our specific needs. Through Mr. Kaufman's IDS I learned how to analyze and organize my thoughts. It is a skill that I am grateful to have learned."

Denah also reminisced about the intimate atmosphere at NYHS

"Because NYHS is so small you felt like   an individual with a strong voice in a close community".

Denah spearheaded the first Recycling Club at NYHS and a Tefilah class for beginners. She was happy to hear that both initiatives are still important endeavors at NYHS today.

When in town, Denah makes sure to support her younger brother Caleb and the 613s at basketball games. "There has always been a lot of camaraderie at NYHS and it's exciting to see that Yeshiva spirit still happening! I am thankful for my experience at the Yeshiva and am a result of the great influence it has had on many young adults and professionals."

Rabbi Ian Bailey 2000 (www.thesevenways.com)
Rabbi Ian Bailey

Rabbi Ian Bailey 2000 was  in town last night to promote his new book, The Seven Ways

Rabbi Bailey graduated from NYHS in 2000 and then spent two years at the yeshiva Derech Etz Chaim in Jerusalem, Israel. He was the first NYHS student to go there. He then received his Bachelor's Degree in Religious Education from the Talmudic University of Florida, Yorah Yorah Rabbinic Ordination from Rabbi Yitzchak Berkovitz at the Jerusalem Kollel (Jerusalem, Israel), and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy with a concentration in Organizational Psychology.

The Seven Ways is Rabbi Ian Bailey's first book. You can purchase it here and know that Rabbi Bailey will be donating a portion of each sale to NYHS and SHA!

In his book, Rabbi Bailey examines seven prominent characters in the Torah who exhibit seven distinct personality characteristics. To bring the topic to life, Rabbi Bailey interviewed ten different people from a wide range of Jewish backgrounds and life experiences. Rabbi Bailey admits that he has always been "a fan of personality systems and studied them in the secular realm". While at Derech Etz Chaim, he took classes that examined the seven forefathers and how their lives related to the personality characteristics or middot. He blended these two bodies of knowledge together to create his new book.

Rabbi Bailey describes himself as a combination of yesod and hod characteristics. These middot/characteristics are associated with Joseph and Aaron and embody leadership and nurturing capabilities.

Rabbi Bailey and his wife Julia and young daughter, Bracha live in Baltimore these days. He is looking forward to being back in Seattle in August and expresses his gratitude to his alma maters, NYHS and SHA.

He says, "When I was a rabbi in Sacramento, I taught a lot of classes in basic Judaism. Most of my congregants did not have a day school background. I began to really appreciate how important it is for a community to have day schools. The overt learning that happens and the learning that occurs by osmosis are both so valuable. One gains a tremendous amount of knowledge through day school. This simple knowledge base helps keep Jewish communities alive and thriving. I wouldn't be where I am today if not for Seattle and the schools".

Rabbi Bailey has chosen to give a portion of the proceeds of the sale of his book to his schools, NYHS and SHA, in order to thank them for their generous support, while he was a student.

We thank Rabbi Ian Bailey for his support and wish him continued success.

From www.thesevenways.com:

The Seven Ways is an innovative new personality system that will radically change the way you understand yourself and others.

Based on a fresh new understanding of the sefirot of kabbalah, The Seven Ways offers keen insight into our unique temperaments and skill sets. The Seven Ways advises us on how to develop ourselves and interact with others by showing us that the subtext of stories of the Bible (Torah) is the same subtext that we experience on a daily basis.

Entertaining to read, The Seven Ways book is an active adventure filled with colorful, insightful interviews with members of each personality type. The Seven Ways sheds refreshing light on how each one of us can grasp our unique personalities and fulfill our potential.
