NYHS MERIT AWARDS- An NYHS Tradition

Message from Rabbi Owen

The excitement is building as we usher in the next few weeks of end of year activities and events. We will be marking milestones, achievements, endings and beginnings. Next week is our annual Merit Award Ceremony.  The NYHS Student Merit Awards were established to recognize students' outstanding achievements.  Awards will be presented at a school assembly on June 1st at 1 pm at NYHS.  Click here for the award recipients. Each recipient will receive a certificate, a cash award and a commemorative book in the subject discipline.  We invite friends and family to join us at this special event.  There will be a dessert reception following the ceremony.  Please rsvp to Melissa Rivkin if you can attend.

To determine award recipients, the selection committee conducts a nomination process followed by a selection process.  In the nomination process, nominees are procured by the committee for each award based on each award's criteria.  These considerations are award-specific and include:  excellence in a discipline judged by grades and positive participation (Academic Awards), quality of breadth and depth of the impact of a student's service (Community Service Award) and a student's consistent effort towards helping others (Chesed Award).

The selection committee is comprised of the two Deans and other administrators and instructors.  The committee chooses between nominees and its decisions are also based on the following considerations:

·         Even if nominated for multiple awards, a student may receive only one Merit Award per year (with very limited exceptions).

·         All students are eligible with the exception of those seniors who will be receiving special awards at graduation.

·         When comparing two equal candidates, priority is given to older students.

Merit Awards are sponsored by donors who often dedicate an award in honor or in memory of a loved one.  We appreciate our Merit Award donors and all our donors. If you have any further questions about Merit Awards or the selection process, please contact Rabbi Owen at (206) 232-5272 x521 or at rowen@nyhs.net.  If you are interested in sponsoring a Merit Award, please contact Melissa Rivkin at (206) 232-5272 x515 or at mrivkin@nyhs.net.

Lag Ba'Omer Field Day and History of the Upcoming Gourmet Food and Desert Auction

By Milana Davydov 2012

Milana and sister

This past Monday, students and faculty enjoyed a yearly tradition by participating in the Lag Ba'Omer field day. Students and staff walked down to Islander park for a morning and afternoon full of sports, games, socializing, and a BBQ lunch! What a wonderful way to start off the week and celebrate Lag Ba'Omer!

Joe and Julie Green, parents of Rena 2013 and Binny 2012, will graciously be opening up their home to host the annual Gourmet Food and Desert Auction, on Thursday June 2nd. NYHS class of 1997 alumna Francine Birk is chairing this event.

In order to learn about  the origins of this unique event, I contacted Mrs. Leya Moskowitz.  Mrs. Moskowitz has been involved with this project for Northwest Yeshiva for many years. "Initially this was started as a small event to raise money for the school. It was very communally based. At the beginning the auction only included deserts, and as the years went on the community decided that it would be a fun idea to add gourmet food as well. The more food items that were being auctioned off, the more fun people had at the event." says Mrs. Moskowitz.

She mentioned that in the beginning, this event was usually done in the winter, but as time went on, scheduling the event a few days before Shavuot brought more people to the event - people loved being able to have delicious deserts for the upcoming holiday. It truly began to become an event that people saved on their calendar. She also mentioned that "the very first year this event was organized, we raised $750. A few years later down the line we raised close to $11,000. Never did anyone think that this event would be able to raise that much money." Mrs. Moskowitz also says that "it is wonderful to see one of my students and one of Rabbi Moskowitz's students - Francine Birk - chair this event. It really shows how this event is dependent it is on the members of the community. Many of the auctioneers that we had back in the day always return to help out with this event. It really is fantastic." Mrs. Moskowitz emphasized that one of the best parts of the auction is that " It really shows how much people want to support the school, while getting good food too!"

Thank you Mrs. Moskowitz for helping keep the spirit of the NYHS Gourmet Food and Desert Auction alive! Another special thanks to Francine Birk who is once again chairing the upcoming Gourmet Food and Desert Auction. I also found out that the committee for this event includes alumni parents, Leah Gladstein and Joy Maimon, alumnae Anna-Aliza Rosenbaum and new parent, Zoe Goldeshtein. Thank you to all the community cooks who are cooking in support of NYHS! And finally, a giant thank you to Joe and Julie Greene who will be opening up their home to host this event! We hope to see you all on Thursday June 2nd at 6:00 PM. Buy delicious treats and support Yeshiva! This event is not one to be missed!

Once again, a giant thank you to everyone who is contributing to make this event possible. Your contributions to the school have made an enormous difference for all the students at Northwest Yeshiva High School and we are grateful.

Did you miss the drama department's production of Between Heaven and Earth on last night at The Erickson Theatre? That's alright! Be sure to come to the encore performance at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, May 31st at The Summit at First Hill. We hope to see you all come out and support our young actors and actresses.

Have a restful weekend and a wonderful Shabbat!

Shabbat Shalom!

Nicki and Talia
Nicki Etsekson 2010 and Talia Etsekson 2013

Nicki Etsekson 2010 is back from her first year at Tulane.  Nicki had a great freshman year and loves Tulane and New Orleans.  Nicki feels that she was very well prepared for academic life on campus.  She made the Dean's List both semesters.  On campus, she is active in a variety of Jewish organizations.  This year she was a member of the Tulane Jewish Leaders (TJL) through Hillel.  She also participated in the Sinai Scholars program of Jewish learning.  Next fall, she will serve on the board of the campus Chabad House.  Nicki told us that close to half her freshmen class is Jewish and that there is a vibrant Jewish vibe on campus.  Tulane has a kosher kitchen at Hillel and both the Chabad and Hillel provide lively shabbat meals and programming.

She has decided to major in Public Health and told us that Tulane is the oldest institution in the US offering such degrees.  She hasn't decided on a career yet but has plenty of time to explore the many options.

Thank you Nicki for catching up with us!

Avraham Young 2009 was a frequent visitor on campus this week and we had the opportunity to catch up with him.  Avraham is in his second year at Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh (KBY) in Israel.  Avraham told us about the rigorous and intense learning schedule at his yeshiva.  He wakes daily before 7 am and spends most of the day and evening learning intensely.  His fellow students come mostly from the United States, but there are also many from across the globe including from South Africa, Canada, Israel, Australia, and England.  Avraham rooms with two Israelis and another American.  Many shiurim at KBY are in Hebrew and he says his Hebrew language skills are pretty good thanks to Orit Maizel Ray!

Over the past year and a half Avraham feels he has gone through "miles of growth".  Although many students came to KBY with a stronger skill set, through his motivation and hard work, Avraham has accomplished a lot.  He also credits his NYHS rabbis and teachers for helping him become a "clear and logical thinker".  "I gained the ability to analyze things critically which helped me formulate clear distinctions in learning.

Avraham has had the opportunity to travel around Israel with KBY and visit with other NYHS alumni.  Adam Polack recently made aliya and entered an ulpan to learn Hebrew at the kibbutz just next door to KBY.  For about five months, Adam Polack came to KBY to study with Avraham Young 2009 and Yehuda Azose 2009 (also at KBY).They learned parts of Masechtot Sanhedrin and Shevuos with Adam. On top of that, Avraham and Yehuda learned all of Masechet Makos with Adam, and Adam made a siyum a couple of days before he entered the Israeli Army!

Alicia Walls 2003 -After graduating from NYHS in 2003, Alicia spent time in Israel at Midreshet Lindenbaum.  She is currently a student at Seattle University working towards a degree in Sociology.  She also works at Group Health and substitute teaches.  Alicia is taking the next three months to work on a research project on gender roles in the subculture Steampunk community with Dr. Cohan of Seattle University.

Alicia told us that she really understood the value of her NYHS education when she took a Philosophy class in college.  She  saw her peers having difficulty studying the material an noticed that they often took lots of notes but didn't know how to learn and process the material or come up with independent ideas.   "It wasn't just the Judaic classes but also the general studies classes at Yeshiva that helped me learn how to learn and learn how to write."

Jake Baker 2009 and Jake Hanan 2012

Congratulations to Jake Baker 2009 (update from January below).  Since we spoke to Jake back in January, he has gotten his private pilot's license! He can now fly a single engine, 200 horse power plane!  He is working towards his instrument license.  Jake is also the new treasurer of the Jewish Student Organization on campus!

Avinoam Baral 2010 completed in the first Jerusalem Marathon last week! He was part of Team Tzvi from his school Eretz Hatzvi.  They raised over $18000 for Tikvot, an Iraeli organization that helps soldiers and victims of terror through sports. Avinoam and his teammates have been training for the last 5 months!  Congrats to Avinoam and his team!

Micol Bayer and FAmily

Micol and Rabbi Aaron Bayer and Koby, Adin and Gabriella

Micol (Rubin)Bayer 1994 -After graduating from NYHS in 1994, Micol spent a year Israel before enrolling and graduating from Stern College in 1998. Micol did the BA/MA program at Stern where she received a BA in Jewish Studies and continued on to earn a Masters in Jewish History.  She also minored in Art.

Today Micol is married to Rabbi Aaron Bayer and they 3 children, Gabriella(2), Adin (4 and a half), Koby (7).  They live in Cleveland, Ohio where Micol owns her own design business.  She specializes in custom made paper cuts and ketubot and all things Judaica.  Check out her website at Micol Designs.  Micol also teaches Art at the Fuchs Mizrahi School.

Micol says that her experience at the Yeshiva inspired her to incorporate Jewish text and learning into her art work.  Micol nurtures her connection with NYHS, even from a distance by creating the beautiful honoree gifts for the dinner and auction.

Thank you Micol for speaking with us this week!

Jake Baker with AirplaneJake Baker 2009 is a sophomore at the University of North Dakota and is studying Aviation Management and UAS (Unmanned Aerial systems) Operations.  Jake explains that Aviation Management is the business side of the aviation world and his degree requires one to get up to and including a commercial pilot's license. Jake is just one flight away from getting a private pilot's license which will allow Jake to fly alone, with passengers, internationally, as well as have many other privileges with an airplane. Jake however will be going a step further and will acquire his CFI license which will give him flight instructor status. After Jake gets his regular fixed wing (airplane) licenses, he will begin flying UAV's (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) which he is extremely excited to do!

Jake's university is the only civilian institution in the United States that offers a degree in UAS.  In fact, Jake will be one of the first students without a military background to earn a degree in this pioneering field.  Jake describes a not too distant future where cargo is flown by unmanned aircraft.  According to Jake, Fed Ex is already exploring this option and the US government is allocating some 20 billion dollars for commercial UAS development.  In some states, police already use such aircraft.

We asked Jake about life on campus beyond academics.  Jake told us that he is "definitely more active" in the tight knit Jewish community this year. He participates in planning shabbat dinners and helps organize Jewish events.  There is only a small Jewish community at the University and they get support from the local synagogue in the area.  Jake says that he has had many experiences with people who had never met a Jew before.  Jake goes on to say, "I love having the opportunity to share my religion with people, many of whom have never met another Jew before me.  Despite this, I haven't experienced any anti-semitism or anti-Israel sentiment on campus.  If anything, people are curious and very supportive.  The only negative feedback I can give about the University of North Dakota is that it gets ridiculously cold in the winters. If you plan on visiting North Dakota... bring a Parka!"

Jake continues to tell us that he feels that NYHS fully prepared him for the college atmosphere, academically and socially.

"I feel ahead of my peers in discussion classes and just generally in the area of forming a solid argument. At the Yeshiva, I learned how to form an effective and logical argument to back up my position.  Also, the Jewish values, cultural understanding and moral standards that Yeshiva has taught me have only been a positive influence and have helped shaped the person I am today. I am proud and honored to have been a student of Northwest Yeshiva High School."

Thank you to Jake for taking the time to share his experiences with us.
