What a week at NYHS:A Message from Rabbi Bernie Fox, Head of School
Sunday morning, Level 4 men and their instructors, left Seattle for Deception Pass for an overnight adventure to celebrate their year of Talmud learning with Rabbi Weiss. That same evening, Dr. Phil and Caryn Gold hosted a night of poker sold at our auction for NYHS supporters in their Capitol Hill home. Thank you to the Golds for hosting this unique and entertaining event in support of our school. Both our Track and Golf teams sent students to Districts. I congratulate all the team members for their hard work and dedication this year. Congratulations to Laurel Aaronson 2014 who qualified for State in the 3200 meter and to Josh Voss who had a personal best in the 1600.Congratulations to Elie Aboulafia 2011 who placed first in Golf at Districts and to Ben Spear 2011. Both seniors will represent NYHS in the State Golf Championship. As the weather improved this week, students and faculty took every opportunity to enjoy the sunshine and some classes had a week without walls. I would like to again thank everyone who made the sport court a reality. It is appreciated and in constant use by our students. On Wednesday evening, NYHS board members came inside to dial for tzedakah. As you know, we are approaching the end of our fiscal year and have a very generous match for donors to double the impact of their gifts to NYHS. Thank you to Rodney Blumenstein for organizing a phone a thon. Thank you to board members Ivan Rothman, Louis Treiger, Lori Gamel, Debra Rettman and Deanne Etsekson for reaching out to donors and sharing this unique opportunity to give to NYHS. This morning, we held a special assembly to discuss the implications of President Obama's speech last night. Avi Behar 2011 made a presentation to his peers about Israel's borders and he encouraged students to educate themselves about the current situation in the Middle East. He also encouraged students to voice their views in the ways this generation knows best... posting a facebook status. As we approach the end of the school year, our days and weeks are filled with celebrations and events marking the many milestones our students have reached. I look forward to sharing in these celebrations with you. Shabbat shalom. |

Student Response's to Obama's Address Regarding the Palestinian - Israel Conflict By Milana Davydov 2012
Friday morning, CIA (Committee for Israel Awareness) head Avi Behar put together an informative assembly and a video presentation regarding President Obama's address to the nation concerning the Palestinian - Israeli conflict. President Obama proposed a plan in which he believes will be a first step to a peace process in the Middle East. He proposed for Israel to return back to its 1967 lines. In reality, these lines have no political or historical significance. Rather, these lines are correctly known as the Armistice Lines. Junior Devon Nikfard (2012)responded by saying "what Obama said has really hurt his reputation. It's hard to believe that Obama virtually turned his back on his ally - Israel." Junior Andrew Orenstein states that "though I do not support Obama's decision, I feel like his address is not terrible, but rather uninformed. I think that Obama's making an assumption that the Palestinians will stop all terror if they get their way. From past experiences, that's a wrong assumption." Friday morning, Prime Minister Netanyahu met with President Obama in the White House. Time will tell how the rest of the events will unfold. Be sure to attend the Drama Department's production of Between Heaven and Earth on May 26th at 7:00 PM at The Erickson Theatre. You can purchase tickets here. Can't make it then? That's alright! Be sure to come to the SECOND performance on May 31st at The Summit at First Hill. Tune in next week to hear all about the upcoming Gourmet Food and Desert Auction! We hope to see you all there - Thursday June 2nd at 6:00 PM at the home of Joe and Julie Greene. Buy delicious treats and support Yeshiva! This event is not one to be missed! Have a restful weekend and a wonderful Shabbat! Shabbat Shalom!

NYHS at Deception Pass
by Andrew Orenstein 2012
Last Sunday, the Level 4 Men embarked on their camping trip to Deception Pass. This trip marks the great accomplishment we have achieved with Talmud learning with Rabbi Weiss in Level 4.
Even though the weather was less than desirable, everyone had a fantastic time, and a wonderful class bonding experience. Led by Rabbi Weiss and Mr. Brodkin, all of the students enjoyed themselves. The boys did everything necessary for any camping trip: set up tents, made a fire, cooked our meals and more. As with all Yeshiva-related outdoor activities, football is a must, and even in the rain and freezing cold, they managed a game. As for the food situation, hamburgers and hotdogs (and even veggie dogs for Mr. Brodkin) were grilled by the newly established Team Nikfard, headed by Devon Nikfard 2012, and they knew exactly what they were doing; the food was delicious. Though the trip only lasted for one night, it contained a lot more than one day's worth of enjoyment.
This was my first ever camping experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I'm pretty sure the reason all of the men were so slow in packing up at the end of the trip was because they didn't want to leave! Both teacher and student enjoyed themselves, and hopefully more trips like that can be planned in the future.
On behalf of the Level 4 men, we would like to thank Rabbi Owen for loaning equipment, Shawn Sobel 2013 and Mrs. Sobel for extensive planning (along with food), as well as Mr. Brodkin for toughing it out with us outside. Thank you to Josh Gladstein 2012 and Zak Shayne 2012 for driving, as well as participating in the camping trip. Also, I would like to thank Rabbi Weiss for making this trip possible as well as providing us with a very fun day and night. Without your contributions, the trip would not have gone so smoothly.

Israel, Obama, and Palestine by Avi Behar 2011
This morning, Avi Behar 2011, chair of the Committee for Israel Awareness, spoke to NYHS students in a special assembly convened to discuss President Obama's speech last night. After Avi's presentation, Rabbi Owen encouraged students to exercise their rights to voice their opinions to our elected leaders.
Here is the text of Avi's presentation:
When surrounding Arab countries attacked Israel in 1948 when it became an independent country, there were no borders. There were military lines defined by the 1949 "Armistice Lines" that formally ended the War for Independence. "Armistice" means "a temporary suspension of hostilities by agreement of the warring parties". In other words, a truce. They were truce lines. The only reason we know of these lines as the "1967 border" is because Arab nationalities have been repeating that phrase so often, that the media accepted it and advertised it, as fact. The term "1967 borders" refer to the ceasefire lines established when the Israeli military forces advanced during the 6-Day War in 1967. They are pre-1967 War Armistice Lines, not borders. The so called "1967 border lines" denote lines of separation that have no basis in history, law, or fact. The 1949 armistice agreement specifically states that the armistice lines have no political or legal significance and do not judge future boundaries.
Watch this video produced by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs that discusses Israel's borders and how they are defended.
Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs Video
President Obama believes that the matter is as simple as redrawing the lines and making two different states. This will never work as long as one side in this conflict refuses to change their mindset that everyone on the other side of the conflict needs to die.
Yes there are some Palestinians who want peace. The reason you almost never hear about them is because they are the minority and their voices are silenced by the extremists.
This is an issue that needs to be heard by as many people as possible. The point of this assembly is to educate all of you in regards to the current situation so that you know at least a little of what you're defending. Extra research would probably also be helpful. Putting this information as your Facebook status would also be helpful as it speeds up the spreading of this information.

Nicki Etsekson 2010 and Talia Etsekson 2013
Nicki Etsekson 2010 is back from her first year at Tulane. Nicki had a great freshman year and loves Tulane and New Orleans. Nicki feels that she was very well prepared for academic life on campus. She made the Dean's List both semesters. On campus, she is active in a variety of Jewish organizations. This year she was a member of the Tulane Jewish Leaders (TJL) through Hillel. She also participated in the Sinai Scholars program of Jewish learning. Next fall, she will serve on the board of the campus Chabad House. Nicki told us that close to half her freshmen class is Jewish and that there is a vibrant Jewish vibe on campus. Tulane has a kosher kitchen at Hillel and both the Chabad and Hillel provide lively shabbat meals and programming.
She has decided to major in Public Health and told us that Tulane is the oldest institution in the US offering such degrees. She hasn't decided on a career yet but has plenty of time to explore the many options.
Thank you Nicki for catching up with us!
Avraham Young 2009 was a frequent visitor on campus this week and we had the opportunity to catch up with him. Avraham is in his second year at Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh (KBY) in Israel. Avraham told us about the rigorous and intense learning schedule at his yeshiva. He wakes daily before 7 am and spends most of the day and evening learning intensely. His fellow students come mostly from the United States, but there are also many from across the globe including from South Africa, Canada, Israel, Australia, and England. Avraham rooms with two Israelis and another American. Many shiurim at KBY are in Hebrew and he says his Hebrew language skills are pretty good thanks to Orit Maizel Ray!
Over the past year and a half Avraham feels he has gone through "miles of growth". Although many students came to KBY with a stronger skill set, through his motivation and hard work, Avraham has accomplished a lot. He also credits his NYHS rabbis and teachers for helping him become a "clear and logical thinker". "I gained the ability to analyze things critically which helped me formulate clear distinctions in learning."
Avraham has had the opportunity to travel around Israel with KBY and visit with other NYHS alumni. Adam Polack recently made aliya and entered an ulpan to learn Hebrew at the kibbutz just next door to KBY. For about five months, Adam Polack came to KBY to study with Avraham Young 2009 and Yehuda Azose 2009 (also at KBY).They learned parts of Masechtot Sanhedrin and Shevuos with Adam. On top of that, Avraham and Yehuda learned all of Masechet Makos with Adam, and Adam made a siyum a couple of days before he entered the Israeli Army!
Ephraim Adatto 2010 visiting from Israel for Pesach where he is studying this year at Derech Etz Chaim. Here he is with former Marilyn Meyer, Sarah Varon and Juliana Gamel

Alicia Walls 2003 -After graduating from NYHS in 2003, Alicia spent time in Israel at Midreshet Lindenbaum. She is currently a student at Seattle University working towards a degree in Sociology. She also works at Group Health and substitute teaches. Alicia is taking the next three months to work on a research project on gender roles in the subculture Steampunk community with Dr. Cohan of Seattle University. Alicia told us that she really understood the value of her NYHS education when she took a Philosophy class in college. She saw her peers having difficulty studying the material an noticed that they often took lots of notes but didn't know how to learn and process the material or come up with independent ideas. "It wasn't just the Judaic classes but also the general studies classes at Yeshiva that helped me learn how to learn and learn how to write."
 Alicia Walls with Mr. Kaufman
Jake Baker 2009 and Jake Hanan 2012
Congratulations to Jake Baker 2009 (update from January below). Since we spoke to Jake back in January, he has gotten his private pilot's license! He can now fly a single engine, 200 horse power plane! He is working towards his instrument license. Jake is also the new treasurer of the Jewish Student Organization on campus!
Avinoam Baral 2010 completed in the first Jerusalem Marathon last week! He was part of Team Tzvi from his school Eretz Hatzvi. They raised over $18000 for Tikvot, an Iraeli organization that helps soldiers and victims of terror through sports. Avinoam and his teammates have been training for the last 5 months! Congrats to Avinoam and his team!
Avinoam Baral 2010 at the Finish Line

Micol and Rabbi Aaron Bayer and Koby, Adin and Gabriella Micol (Rubin)Bayer 1994 -After graduating from NYHS in 1994, Micol spent a year Israel before enrolling and graduating from Stern College in 1998. Micol did the BA/MA program at Stern where she received a BA in Jewish Studies and continued on to earn a Masters in Jewish History. She also minored in Art.
Today Micol is married to Rabbi Aaron Bayer and they 3 children, Gabriella(2), Adin (4 and a half), Koby (7). They live in Cleveland, Ohio where Micol owns her own design business. She specializes in custom made paper cuts and ketubot and all things Judaica. Check out her website at Micol Designs. Micol also teaches Art at the Fuchs Mizrahi School.
Micol says that her experience at the Yeshiva inspired her to incorporate Jewish text and learning into her art work. Micol nurtures her connection with NYHS, even from a distance by creating the beautiful honoree gifts for the dinner and auction.
Thank you Micol for speaking with us this week!
Jake Baker 2009 is a sophomore at the University of North Dakota and is studying Aviation Management and UAS (Unmanned Aerial systems) Operations. Jake explains that Aviation Management is the business side of the aviation world and his degree requires one to get up to and including a commercial pilot's license. Jake is just one flight away from getting a private pilot's license which will allow Jake to fly alone, with passengers, internationally, as well as have many other privileges with an airplane. Jake however will be going a step further and will acquire his CFI license which will give him flight instructor status. After Jake gets his regular fixed wing (airplane) licenses, he will begin flying UAV's (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) which he is extremely excited to do!
Jake's university is the only civilian institution in the United States that offers a degree in UAS. In fact, Jake will be one of the first students without a military background to earn a degree in this pioneering field. Jake describes a not too distant future where cargo is flown by unmanned aircraft. According to Jake, Fed Ex is already exploring this option and the US government is allocating some 20 billion dollars for commercial UAS development. In some states, police already use such aircraft. We asked Jake about life on campus beyond academics. Jake told us that he is "definitely more active" in the tight knit Jewish community this year. He participates in planning shabbat dinners and helps organize Jewish events. There is only a small Jewish community at the University and they get support from the local synagogue in the area. Jake says that he has had many experiences with people who had never met a Jew before. Jake goes on to say, "I love having the opportunity to share my religion with people, many of whom have never met another Jew before me. Despite this, I haven't experienced any anti-semitism or anti-Israel sentiment on campus. If anything, people are curious and very supportive. The only negative feedback I can give about the University of North Dakota is that it gets ridiculously cold in the winters. If you plan on visiting North Dakota... bring a Parka!" Jake continues to tell us that he feels that NYHS fully prepared him for the college atmosphere, academically and socially. "I feel ahead of my peers in discussion classes and just generally in the area of forming a solid argument. At the Yeshiva, I learned how to form an effective and logical argument to back up my position. Also, the Jewish values, cultural understanding and moral standards that Yeshiva has taught me have only been a positive influence and have helped shaped the person I am today. I am proud and honored to have been a student of Northwest Yeshiva High School." Thank you to Jake for taking the time to share his experiences with us. Jake visits Level 5 Gemorah class
Benjy Balint 1994 is on a two-month fellowship with the Middle East Fellowship of the International Journalists' Program. Benjy is one of 7 Israeli journalists chosen for the program in Germany. He's writing for the weekly Die Zeit newspaper in Hamburg. Click here for the latest review of his book, Running Commentary.
Ben Siscovick 1999 works as an early stage venture capitalist in NYC at IA Ventures (www.iaventurepartners.com) and is married to a wonderful woman and supremely talented entrepreneur/jewelry designer, Jenny Klatt Siscovick (www.jemmawynne.com).
After graduating from NYHS in 1999, Ben spent a year at Yeshivat Hakotel in Jerusalem before attending the University of Pennsylvania where he earned his B.A. in Philosophy and Economics.
