Happy Adar!

by Milana Davydov 2012
This week, students arrived at school to find that the level 5 women had spent the night at NYHS and transformed the entire building in honor of Adar! From desks in the locker room, to signs on doors, and streamers through the halls, the level 5 women did a fantastic job with setting the tone for an exciting month ahead!
The morning was topped off with a delicious Krispy Kreme doughnut breakfast, followed by a "Mishe Nichnas Adar" train that was paraded around the entire school by the NYHS men. Watch out for reminders on themes for an upcoming spirit week! We hope to see everyone dressed up in spirit of Adar!
This past Monday, NYHS had the honor of having Yeshiva University President Richard Joel visit our campus and speak to all of the students. He introduced his talk regarding who he is, his role as YU president, along with other activities he hosts and runs. He continued to elaborate on the value of a Judaic education past students' high school years. President Richard Joel stressed the notion of a "personal match" for a student's school. He expanded on the idea that a student must be happy at the school he/she is attending. President Richard Joel discussed what makes YU different from other universities; the obvious one - a brilliant Jewish community - along with opportunities for integrated studies with both secular and Judaic studies at a high level, as well as the type of people that attend YU, are all what makes YU so unique. Click here to read an interview with President Joel in the JT News.
There was an exciting surprise that was revealed at the NYHS Gala Dinner and Auction on Sunday, February 27th. Special thanks to NYHS parents, Iris and Steven Schwartz, who have helped facilitate a donation of eighteen top of the line HP laptop computers, along with three Dell laptop computers. A few Flip Cameras personalized with the NYHS logo on them were donated as well to enhance the school technologically. "We feel luck that we have access to the type of people who can help provide these materials for the school" says Iris Schwartz. "Steven and I believe that it is important to provide the technology students need to succeed in today's world" she adds. We thank Hewlett Packard and Dell for their generous support. Once again, we thank each of you so much for you generous contributions for the school! Contributions like yours are the reason NYHS students can continue to grow, learn and excel.
Don't forget to take part in the Sam Owen Endowment, brought to you by Ruben Owen and Julie Owen. Please make a donation specifying that it is to be part of the endowment. All donations make a difference.
Have a restful weekend and a wonderful Shabbat.
Shabbat Shalom!

Shakespeare to Kline Galland
& ESU Competition on Sunday
This Thursday we took Shakespeare to Kline Galland! Four of our eight Shakespeare Competition participants did an encore performance of their monologues at the Kline Galland Home. Although illness kept four students from joining us on this field trip, it was a successful program. Mrs. Polyakovsky narrated the stories of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Macbeth. Ben Spear, Kalman Clement, Yotam Bentov and Shmuel Treiger performed monologues from these two plays. After the performance, students passes out Purim treats--boxes of candy. Kline Galland residents and Day Center attendees enjoyed the program and the visit by our students.
This Sunday, March 13th Ben Spear (NYHS Shakespeare Competition winner) and Jessica Schwartz (NYHS Shakespeare Competition runner-up) will compete in the Seattle Branch of the English Speaking Union's all-city Shakespeare Competition at the Frye Art Museum. Good luck Ben and Jessica!

World Languages Day at the UW by Jaime O'Leary, Spanish Instructor
Last Friday, March 4th, ten NYHS language students (Hebrew and Spanish)and two teachers attended World Languages Day at the University of Washington. This is a special day at the UW where language classrooms are opened to high school students from all over the State. They get a glimpse of University level courses, hear presentations on language programs abroad, visit the Burke Museum and obtain a tour of the campus and get a feel for college life. Not only did our students sit in on some excellent classes they were also able to meet up with some NYHS alumni who graciously toured the campus with them. We even saw some famous UW athletes like Jake Locker, Abdul -Gaddy and Brian Ammaning. While the weather was not as sunny and spring was not as advanced as it was during last year's trip when we got to experience the cherry blossoms in bloom, a good learning experience was had by all! |

NYHS and Baseball

We are proud to partner with the Seattle Jewish Film Festival to show Jews and Baseball - A Love Story!
Please join us on Sunday morning, March 13 at Pacific Place to see this film.
Here is a brief description of the film from
www.jewsandbaseball.com:
JEWS AND BASEBALL: AN AMERICAN LOVE STORY explores the connection between Jewish Americans and baseball, our nation's most iconic institution. More than a film about sports, it is a story of immigration, assimilation, bigotry, heroism, the passing on of traditions, and the shattering of stereotypes
"You should be an attorney or a doctor, but not a ballplayer," one former major leaguer remembers, describing the prejudices that he and other Jewish athletes faced. But despite the stereotypes, and in the face of hostility from fans and even violence from opposing players, there have been standout Jewish players in every decade from the 1860s to the present. JEWS AND BASEBALL is the first major documentary to tell their stories.
Interviews include fans, writers, executives, and especially players - including Al Rosen, Kevin Youkilis, Shawn Green, Norm Sherry, Ron Blomberg, Bob Feller, Yogi Berra, and a rare interview with the legendary Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax. Fans Ron Howard and Larry King speak of the meaning of Jewish ballplayers in their own lives, while historians and even two baseball-loving rabbis relate the stories of Jewish players to the turbulent history of the last century. These powerful personal and historical stories are interwoven with an extraordinary collection of rare archival footage and photos, and a musical score ranging from Benny Goodman to Yo-Yo Ma to Rush.
Dustin Hoffman narrates this engaging story of great drama, unforgettable games, and the broad sweep of American history.

Micol and Rabbi Aaron Bayer and Koby, Adin and Gabriella Micol (Rubin)Bayer 1994 -After graduating from NYHS in 1994, Micol spent a year Israel before enrolling and graduating from Stern College in 1998. Micol did the BA/MA program at Stern where she received a BA in Jewish Studies and continued on to earn a Masters in Jewish History. She also minored in Art.
Today Micol is married to Rabbi Aaron Bayer and they 3 children, Gabriella(2), Adin (4 and a half), Koby (7). They live in Cleveland, Ohio where Micol owns her own design business. She specializes in custom made paper cuts and ketubot and all things Judaica. Check out her website at Micol Designs. Micol also teaches Art at the Fuchs Mizrahi School.
Micol says that her experience at the Yeshiva inspired her to incorporate Jewish text and learning into her art work. Micol nurtures her connection with NYHS, even from a distance by creating the beautiful honoree gifts for the dinner and auction.
Thank you Micol for speaking with us this week!
Jake Baker 2009 is a sophomore at the University of North Dakota and is studying Aviation Management and UAS (Unmanned Aerial systems) Operations. Jake explains that Aviation Management is the business side of the aviation world and his degree requires one to get up to and including a commercial pilot's license. Jake is just one flight away from getting a private pilot's license which will allow Jake to fly alone, with passengers, internationally, as well as have many other privileges with an airplane. Jake however will be going a step further and will acquire his CFI license which will give him flight instructor status. After Jake gets his regular fixed wing (airplane) licenses, he will begin flying UAV's (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) which he is extremely excited to do!
Jake's university is the only civilian institution in the United States that offers a degree in UAS. In fact, Jake will be one of the first students without a military background to earn a degree in this pioneering field. Jake describes a not too distant future where cargo is flown by unmanned aircraft. According to Jake, Fed Ex is already exploring this option and the US government is allocating some 20 billion dollars for commercial UAS development. In some states, police already use such aircraft. We asked Jake about life on campus beyond academics. Jake told us that he is "definitely more active" in the tight knit Jewish community this year. He participates in planning shabbat dinners and helps organize Jewish events. There is only a small Jewish community at the University and they get support from the local synagogue in the area. Jake says that he has had many experiences with people who had never met a Jew before. Jake goes on to say, "I love having the opportunity to share my religion with people, many of whom have never met another Jew before me. Despite this, I haven't experienced any anti-semitism or anti-Israel sentiment on campus. If anything, people are curious and very supportive. The only negative feedback I can give about the University of North Dakota is that it gets ridiculously cold in the winters. If you plan on visiting North Dakota... bring a Parka!" Jake continues to tell us that he feels that NYHS fully prepared him for the college atmosphere, academically and socially. "I feel ahead of my peers in discussion classes and just generally in the area of forming a solid argument. At the Yeshiva, I learned how to form an effective and logical argument to back up my position. Also, the Jewish values, cultural understanding and moral standards that Yeshiva has taught me have only been a positive influence and have helped shaped the person I am today. I am proud and honored to have been a student of Northwest Yeshiva High School." Thank you to Jake for taking the time to share his experiences with us. Jake visits Level 5 Gemorah class
Benjy Balint 1994 is on a two-month fellowship with the Middle East Fellowship of the International Journalists' Program. Benjy is one of 7 Israeli journalists chosen for the program in Germany. He's writing for the weekly Die Zeit newspaper in Hamburg. Click here for the latest review of his book, Running Commentary.
Ben Siscovick 1999 works as an early stage venture capitalist in NYC at IA Ventures (www.iaventurepartners.com) and is married to a wonderful woman and supremely talented entrepreneur/jewelry designer, Jenny Klatt Siscovick (www.jemmawynne.com).
After graduating from NYHS in 1999, Ben spent a year at Yeshivat Hakotel in Jerusalem before attending the University of Pennsylvania where he earned his B.A. in Philosophy and Economics. After graduating from UPenn, Ben began his career as a web entrepreneur and founding partner at D202 - a full service web development and consulting firm focused on online communities and social networks. After leaving D202, Ben worked as junior investment banker at Allen & Company and Barclays Capital after which he earned his M.B.A. from Columbia Business School. |
