Meta-Musing...from Spirit of Unity

                    Freedom's Fatal Flaw

Blessings To You;

I am trusting you are enjoying your holiday, and the "cause for which we pause." What a blessing our freedom is. How can we ever thank the men and women who made it possible? I believe that would be by living a life worthy of the risks they took, and the things they suffered.

Our country was built on the concept of freedom. The only problem is that our freedom has developed a fatal flaw. We are missing half of the equation. Instead of our freedom being a blessing, it is in fact causing compounding problems. The good news, is that we CAN fix the flaw and enjoy a level of freedom greater than we ever thought!

Galatians 5:13&14

"For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants of one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

                                                        Unity Wisdom

"God gives Himself to man, and man has the power to make himself what he will. Freedom of will is man's inheritance, and he can use that freedom to build or destroy as he determines"

Charles Fillmore - Keep A True Lent
Many years ago, the Declaration of Independence was written with a very good intention. The good of the people had been endangered, and it was time to do something new; to unite for a cause the people held dear. I have just re-read it...something I think we should do each year at this time, as a source of grounding and inspiration; a reminder of how we became The United States of America.

While the words are as vital and important today as they ever were, I believe...largely because most people have not read the Declaration of Independence  since seventh grade, the whole point is being missed. Rather than affirming the rights of EVERYONE, a consciousness of entitlement; our "right" to say and do whatever we want, regardless of the consequences, or impact on others or our environment has flawed the pure intention of the Declaration.

In our current understanding of it, Freedom's fatal flaw is failing to include responsibility, and the common good. This is not a "this or that;" "freedom or responsibility" matter, it is "this AND that." We are not just a country among countries, we are a vital, interconnected part of a Worldwide Community. We are not just a people, we are a part of the family of all creation; an ecosystem, and the Universe itself. We are each a part of the Oneness we call God.

But none of this is new. It has been the Truth of our Being from the beginning of time, we just did not realize it. In Unity we teach that the "fall of man" is the falling away of our awareness of our Oneness; and the sense of separation. It is only from the consciousness of separation that we can wage war. It is only from a consciousness of separation that crime can occur. It is only from a consciousness of separation we can behave irresponsibly and selfishly.

Having dreams and visions for ourselves is not wrong; until and unless it bears a negative impact on the good of the whole. Each year I like to share something that is very dear to my heart. It is the Global Declaration of Interdependence.

We, the people of planet Earth,
in recognition of the interconnectedness of all life
And the importance of the balance of nature,
Hereby acknowledge our interdependence
And affirm our dedication
To life-serving environmental stewardship,
The fulfillment of universal human needs worldwide,
Economic and social well-being,
And a culture of peace and nonviolence,
To insure a sustainable and harmonious world
For present and future generations.

As you enjoy your freedom today and every day, consider these words.

Have a bright, beautiful, better-than-average day.
