Emerson String Quartet, Princeton University Concerts
Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall, 8:00PM
Pre-concert talk by Scott Burnham at 7:00PM

Emerson Quartet America's greatest quartet (Time Magazine) returns to the Princeton campus after a 12 year hiatus.  The first of Beethoven's legendary late string quartets launches a season-long tribute to a composer whose music is still considered radical.  Following Barber's astonishingly moving anthem comes a brilliant quartet by Shostakovich, who knew something of Beethoven's pain and anguish.

Why is Barber's Adagio so often heard at moments of profound commemoration?  Professor Scott Burnham will address this question in a pre-concert talk, free to ticketholders.

PROGRAM:
BEETHOVEN  Quartet for Strings in E-flat Major, Op. 127
BARBER  Adagio from String Quartet, Op. 11
SHOSTAKOVICH  Quartet for Strings No. 5 in B-flat Major, Op. 92

This concert is part of  Memory and the Work of Art, a community-wide festival exploring how the arts shape collective and cultural memory.

TICKETS:
$40, $30, $20 general; $10, $5 students.
