April 2010 header

Greetings!

As busy business owners straddling oodles of "to-do's, I-should, and I'll get-around-to-it's ... Who here doesn't get overwhelmed at times?

It can be quite frustrating juggling the many important decisions and tasks that come up jockeying for a piece of your brain!

Have you, like many, been considering an e-mail newsletter as part of your marketing campaign but, for whatever reasons haven't got around to it?  Have you found yourself saying I wish I had someone to delegate to?

One client recently told me how many grand intentions she had that she didn't have time to put into action. One item on her to-do list was to make better use of her database -  she correctly suspected she was missing opportunities because she just didn't have the time to deal with it.

Well, this  edition is not about "you should!" We all hear enough of that... This month we're focusing on "I did"!

Warmly,
Melinda and the Go West Design Group Team

Getting around to it.

Meet Lindsay Case, owner of Applause Hair and Esthetics Studio.  Lindsay is a savvy young business woman - and like many of us, she found her "to-do" list was getting longer, not shorter, and she knew she wanted to spend more time working on her business and enjoying her success rather than burning out.

Lindsay's objectives and goals were clear. She wished to take advantage of opportunities (working smarter, not harder), and expand her business within a reasonable marketing budget.

So, what did we do? Our objectives: to increase frequency of repeat business, build clientele and expand retail sales.

We wanted to make her current clients feel like a million dollars and strategically move them to buy more.

Three Ways To Cope With Rocky Times.

For small business owners, the idea of surviving in a recession is daunting.  Your immediate (and understandable) tendency is to pull back, sit still and wait for things to get better.  However, that may not be the smartest thing to do. Although it seems counter-intuitive, I believe many smaller businesses can actually prosper during recessions. But that won't happen if you're hiding in the corner waiting for the storm to pass.

1. Cutting expenses
Reevaluate your business expenses.  Look for waste. Find ways to spend less money. Rally your employees to get involved in the process.  Employees worried about their own futures tend to come together to help ensure a company's survival and their jobs.

2. Reexamine your leases

Though it seems drastic, it may be a good time to relocate.  Many building owners are eager to fill empty spaces. If you can get a good deal, it can more than pay for itself. Or, try to renegotiate.  In tough times nearly everything is negotiable.

3. 'Hire' your customers, increase marketing
Instead of hiding, this is a great time to make yourself and your business more visable. One of the best ways to drum up new business is to put your satisfied clients to work for you.
