#3. Trying to convince people.    
 
Your customers understand your service and/or product but are not aware that they need it.  Often what happens is businesses spend a significant portion of their marketing budget on convincing customers that they need their service and/or product.
 
I recently read an interesting article in the Financial Post.  A small business owner saw the biggest change in her business when she hired a professional firm to help rebrand her services into something people would 'get'.  Within a year her business increased 300%.
  • Adjust your message into something people 'get' by highlighting the differences between your product and others, and explaining why it is better. You can make the difference stand out by incorporating an analogy.  Analogy plays a significant role in decision making, perception, memory, creativity, emotion, explanation and communication.

For example, "Two Brains are better than one" (2000) used to market the introduction of the dual processor Power Mac G4s.

#3. Signage.
 
When it comes to marketing your service or product, signage is extremely important. Yet it seems that more times then not it gets the least amount of attention. Have you ever got in your car in a great mood knowing you're going to go check out a sale at a store your friend told you about only to drive around the block unable to find where it is? Frustrated, you give up and either shop and spend your money elsewhere or simply go back home.
 
 
 
Signage gives a person the first impression and speaks volumes about that business.

Have you ever picked up a cheap paperback from a generation back and found it almost unreadable? 
 
Not long ago I placed a hold on a library book, but when it came in I nearly put it back on the shelf - even though it was a topic I was very interested in, and I'd read great reviews about the book. 
 
The problem wasn't the message, it was the way the book was printed!
  Cheap, smudgy ink, and dense text crammed onto the page made me feel lost before I started the first words.
 
Fortunately, print quality has increased ten-fold with the advent of new printing technologies - but there are still many ways to go wrong as you are writing your content.
