The 3 Secrets to Effective Branding That Make Small Businesses Successful.

#3. Brand Audience.

Know your market. An effective brand develops a relationship between the specific audience and the actual product/service. If you haven't defined "who" your specific audience is, how can you "speak" to them to initiate this process? When you speak to everyone, you speak to no one.

Making assumptions about your specific audience can lead to poor decisions, wasted resources and business failure.
The narrower you define your specific audience the easier it will be to gather information about what that audience is looking for.  Market research will help you develop an impactful brand that addresses your audience's needs.

When you know your specific audience:

  • Your business resonates with them.
  • You can build customer loyalty.
  • You will develop targeted marketing efforts.
  • You can consider narrowing your focus even further (marketplace niche).
    • Businesses that establish niche markets are at a great advantage by removing competition.
    • Have the opportunity of defining itself as a leader.

Do you know who your specific audience is?

The Branding Buzzword.

When it comes to marketing, do you keep hearing the buzzword "branding"? What exactly does this mean and why is it important that your brand speaks to your specific audience?

Believe it or not I have a dictionary of marketing terms and I decided to quote right from this source. I looked up two different words because they go hand in hand.  According to my dictionary "Brand awareness" and "brand image" mean the following:

Brand Awareness - "having knowledge of the existence of a BRAND. Because brand awareness is considered the first step in the sale, the primary goal of some advertising campaigns is simply to make the target market aware that a particular brand exists. Often, this effort alone will sell the product or service."

Brand Image - "qualities that consumers associate with a specific brand, expressed in terms of human behavior and desires, but also related to price, quality, and situational use of the brand. For example: A brand such as Mercedes Benz will conjure up a strong public image because of its sensory and physical characteristics as well as its price. This image is not inherent in the brand name but is created through advertising."

I couldn't have said it better myself. The meaning of each term is straightforward and broken down into layman's terms verses marketing gibberish.

What do the Nike Swoosh, Golden Arches, Michelin Man, Jolly Green Giant and I Love NY all have in common?

Well to start with, you could probably picture each of these brand icons from memory. In fact, these images are so strong that they frequently appear without the company name attached, and we still know what they represent.  They have become "visual brand icons" - symbols that represent their corporate brand.
Not many people know that "I 'heart' NY" was designed in 1975 to help boost tourism to the Big Apple. But today it is synonymous with New York City. The Michelin Man was created in France in 1989, and yet it is as popular today in advertising as he was then; selling everything from windshield wipers to maps ... and of course tires! In 1971 Nike started using the "swoosh" to represent speed and movement. I would say it has done that perfectly!
