3. Not having a comprehensive marketing strategy.  
 
When your efforts are ad-hoc, panicked and reactive, rather than planned and strategic, the results show in your return on investment - or lack of it...
 
Recently, a client told me he had committed to an advertising campaign within a local publication. His decision was based on a good sales presentation and the need for more business. It was not part of an overall market strategy or budgeted for, however he committed to this fair-size investment anyway. When I asked how it was working for him, it became apparent that he had not received any return on the investment. After almost a year, the client accepted that they had made a poor decision; he decided to invest his company's budget towards a marketing strategy.

3. Believe it or not, the third biggest mistake is all about colour.
 
When it comes to marketing, colour is very important. Did you know some colours bring joy others anger and some colours even make you want to rush out and purchase that product or service? 
 
You have to think about who is going to be buying your product or service. Are they male or female? Family or single? Young or old. These groups respond to colour differently, and what works for one may not for another.  When in doubt, ask a professional to help you choose what colour or colours will be best for your marketing materials.

3. Knowing too much. 
 
Is it possible to know your area of expertise too well?  When you are performing your expert tasks, of course not! 
 
A patient going in for surgery hopes that the doctor in charge is the best in the field.  But sometimes that same doctor may find it hard to explain in layman's terms exactly what happens during the operation.
 
It's the same for many business owners.  They know their area of expertise so well, that it's hard to start at square one and cover the basics, which is probably all their customers need to know. 
 
A good business writer can take your vast area of knowledge and boil it down to a few simple "need to know" points for people who are looking for your business - closing the gap between their need and your expertise.
