Front Yard on a Budget - Low Cost Curb Appeal is a Great Investment
by J C Walker
First impressions are important. Whether you plan on selling your house or whether you want to make a good impression at your next dinner party or family gathering, an appealing front yard can start things off in the right direction. Any elbow grease you put into your front yard will pay you back and then some by increasing the value of your home (not to mention improving relations with the neighbors). It does not have to cost a lot up front.
Front Yard on a Budget Tips
*Keep your eye out at garage sales for workable gardening/yard tools: Spades, rakes and lawn mowers can cost a lot, so if you are out at garage sales keep an eye open for them.
*Save money on plants: Ask friends for starts from their hostas or irises. Or learn how to divide and propagate your existing plants. Also, neighborhood garden clubs often have plant swaps. Look online to see if there is a club in your area. If you must buy plants buy medium sized plants as they are less expensive than large plants and they will, with good care, grow into larger plants. To plant your front yard on a budget avoid buying at the beginning of the season as prices are grossly inflated.
*I love rocks!: Can you line your flower garden with a beautiful rock arrangement rather than store bought materials? Larger rocks can be the centerpiece of a garden or a stand alone decorative element. The best thing about them is you can collect them a little bit at a time from nearby fields, or wooded areas.
*Seek out free materials: Keep your eye out for free dirt or wood chips. We found wood chips that the city was giving away for free
from their spring maintenance of parks and natural areas.
*Lighting: Want to do your front yard on a budget and be green at the same time? Why not add some solar yard lights. These are relatively inexpensive. For $20-$40 you can get a set that will add a lovely ambiance to a front yard in the evening. And it saves you from having to dig up your front yard to add power. A good solar light will give hours of light each night. Look at this option as mood lighting as solar lights do not put out a lot of light.
You don't need to spend thousands to have a beautiful front yard on a budget.
