Trick? No - just a month of treats!
Halloween is upon us, pumpkins are carved, costumes are almost ready (we hope), and now it's time to have some fun. Join us at Twirl from 5pm - 7pm on Sunday for our freaky deaky Halloween Open House. We'll have entertainment from Wise Fools, ghoulish games, glow-in-the-dark treats and scary button-making. We'll also be serving free hot dogs and beans and cheese, so no need to worry about those hunger monsters before night-time trick and treating. Stop by after the Plaza fun -BOO to you!
Join us also between 4.00 - 5.30pm on Tuesday November 2nd for a special Dia de Los Muertos celebration - we'll have a traditional craft, refreshments and fun. If you can't make it on the day, check out Angela's Craft of the Month for a fun Day of the Dead craft idea to try at home.
One extra special date to mark in the diary is Friday November 26th, when we kick off the festive season with our opening party for "A World of Wonder", this year's winter holiday extravaganza. We'll be playing with the idea of scale, introducing both big and little exhibits, which children will be invited to explore as part of a "Can You See What I See?" scavenger hunt. The Opening Party runs through 1pm - 4pm, with music, Santa, cookies and hot cocoa, ornament-making, tree decorating, little gifts to take home, and some surprises. SAVE THE DATE NOW! We're still looking for any unwanted teeny tiny toys or objects you might have to add to our Holiday Festival. Anything goes, as long as it's 3" or under -figurines, dinos, critters, people, animals, cars, trees, buttons, bugs - all inanimate please! Ornament-making starts in earnest next week, in preparation for the festivities. Come make and take a holiday ornament at one of our craft sessions throughout November. See below for full details. Let's dance, stretch, wiggle, sing, create - FOR FREE!. With the season of giving almost upon us, we thought we'd start things off a little early. From November 1st, all Twirl classes will be free until the end of the year. That's right - absolutely free, nada, nilch, nothing. That applies to all classes - Ballet, Yoga, Hoop Dancing and Family Music - meaning that in addition to our crafts, there's now a free class or activity at Twirl every day of the week, except Sunday (but watch this space for an exciting new activity coming soon). So come try something new, and spread the word so your friends can too!
Finally, don't forget our Twirl Rangers program is now up and running. We're looking for kids who'd like to become scouts for Twirl, keeping their eyes out for cool toys, games and other stuff. Suggest something that we end up carrying in the store and you'll get one of them for free. We're happy to hear from older scouts too, so if you have any ideas, email molly@twirlhouse.com or come fill out a form in store. Now is also the time to tell us about any particular items you would like to see in for the holidays - chief elf Molly is busy ordering, so get your requests in now. |
Craft of the Month with Angela & Max!
A chance to try one of our seasonal crafts at home, alone! This month, I've chosen a special Dia de Los Muertos activity. Day of the Dead is a Mexican tradition combining Aztec and Roman Catholic practices and beliefs that date back many centuries. It is believed that on Nov. 1 and 2 the souls of our loved ones who have passed away are able to return to their homes and visit with friends and family. Relatives prepare for their arrival with joy and respect. One way is to build a beautiful ofrenda (altar) in honor of the departed. This felt skull banner will add a happy touch to your ofrenda.
Materials: Felt, assorted colors Scissors Craft glue and/or glue gun Ribbon ( a nice long piece) Glitter Buttons, sequins, puff paints, cloth bits,
and other decorative objects
Directions: 1) Select a few larger pieces of felt for your backgrounds, and cut them down to the size you prefer. Use the other pieces of felt to cut out shapes such as skulls, flowers, hearts, or letters to spell names and/or words
2) Arrange your shapes and designs onto the larger background pieces. Glue them in place. You may use your squares to honor someone who has passed, each square for a different person or for decorative purposes only; whichever you prefer.
3) Add buttons, sequins, puff paints, cloth and felt bits, glitter, and any other decorative objects you have selected. Glue in place. In Mexico, Day of the Dead decorations are very colorful and happy feeling, so the more color, the better! Give your banner personality!
4) Allow some time to dry.
5) Arrange your pieces in a row, and then flip them over with the backside facing up. Add a line of glue along the top edge of each piece and press the ribbon in place. Make sure to leave a nice long end on each side so that you can hang up your project. |
