CMS Proposed Rule Ties Annual Payment Update to Inpatient Quality Reporting Program, Supports Efforts to Lower Costs

Public Comment Period Open Through June 20
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in April issued a proposed rule that would update Medicare payment policies and rates for hospitals in Fiscal Year (FY) 2012. Proposals included in the rule would help support federal efforts to reform our health care delivery system by improving care quality and patient outcomes, addressing long-term health care cost growth, and supporting the goals of the recently announced Partnership for Patients. Hospital Compare Website Offers New Data About Hospital Acquired Infections
As many as 98,000 people die in hospitals each year from medical errors that could have been prevented through proper care. Important new data about the safety of care available in America's hospitals was added to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) Hospital Compare website in April.  HAC data show how often potentially life-threatening events take place. National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) Update
NHSN has recently been updated to version 6.4. With this release, all facilities will have the ability to update their CMS Certification Number (CCN) on record with NHSN. An accurate CCN is required for those facilities participating in the CMS Reporting Program, as this is the ID that will be used to submit ICU CLABSI data to CMS on your behalf. The CCN is a six digit number which will begin with 370 for Oklahoma acute care hospitals.   http://www.cdc.gov/nhsn/library.html

To update the CCN, use the Facility > Facility Info option within NHSN. At the top of the screen, verify and update, if necessary, the CCN in the appropriate data entry field. If any changes have been made, remember to click the "Update" button at the bottom of screen.

Please be sure to double- and triple-check this number!
