| NEW RESOURCES FOR PROVIDERS! | |
|
| CEO's Corner | |
Dale Bratzler, DO, MPH
OFMQ President and CEO
I want to acknowledge and appreciate the dedicated efforts of so many in Oklahoma hospitals, nursing homes and physician practices, who have partnered with OFMQ in our quality improvement programs. In this issue of Quality Connection, you'll read about the progress we've made and what you can expect next from OFMQ as we work together to improve healthcare quality in our state.
OFMQ is excited about helping to promote the adoption and use of health information technology by Oklahoma physicians and other healthcare professionals. We continue to invite eligible providers to join our Regional Extension Center. OFMQ will be a vital resource for providers implementing electronic health records (EHR) to achieve "meaningful use" so they can meet the eligibility requirements for American Recovery and Reinvestment Act incentive dollars. This money will help offset the purchase price of an EHR. Through our federal grant from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, OFMQ's services are 90% paid for and allow us to provide services at very low cost. It is a great time to get on board with implementation of an EHR. The longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to qualify for incentive dollars.
OFMQ remains committed to our vision to promote significant improvements locally and nationally in health quality. We value our partnerships with Oklahoma providers and commend all of you for the improvements that have been achieved. |

The Business Case for Reducing Healthcare Associated Infections |
|
Healthcare providers agree we have an obligation to do no harm. Reducing the likelihood a patient might get an infection as a result of health care certainly fits with this imperative. But, what about the bottom line? Infection prevention - gowns, gloves, soap and infection control teams - cost money, time and human resources. Is there a business case for reducing HAI? Healthcare leaders explored this issue at a recent American Health Care Executives (AHCE) meeting, presented in collaboration with the Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality (OFMQ). The Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality (OFMQ) needs physicians to help ensure healthcare services meet exemplary standards of care. Under contract with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), OFMQ reviews medical cases where quality of care or healthcare utilization is in question. Third-party physician reviewers are necessary to make a final determination in such cases. We need physicians in all areas of Oklahoma and in all types of practice. Currently, we have particular need for specialists in cardiology and internal medicine. For more information on requirements and details, click here. |

CMS Launches New User-Friendly Website
CMS posted a new and easier to use version of www.medicare.gov, the Medicare consumer-focused Web site. The updated Web site is part of the steps Medicare is taking to make using www.medicare.gov easier for seniors and people who care for them to find the information they need about Medicare. The improved Web site provides users with a summary of Medicare benefits, coverage options, rights and protections, and answers to the most frequently asked questions about Medicare.
The updated Web site reflects Web 2.0 design principles and concepts. The new design was focus tested with seniors, caregivers and operators at Medicare's helpline, 1-800-MEDICARE, some of the most frequent users of www.medicare.gov. The new design gives Medicare more flexibility to quickly update information that is important to users, especially people with Medicare and family members who care for them.
