Greetings!

This year's fall road trip was a wonderful photographic adventure for both the "digitals" and we "film people." Seven of us traveled for five days from Santa Fe to Taos to Silverton to Chaco Canyon, weathering and enjoying the variety of atmospheric conditions provided by nature!  We had a sunny drive up the high road to Taos that was followed by thunderstorms the same day at the Rio Grande Gorge.  Bobcats, owls and eagles seemed to be at every turn.  A day of rain in Silverton didn't dampen our spirits; instead, it offered us the opportunity for some wonderful work inside the old mine buildings.  When the weather finally broke, we had moody skies, snow on the peaks and aspen forests that had turned from green to gold, literally overnight.  To my photographic companions on the trip - thank you for the comraderie, spirit of adventure, and the pleasure of learning both from you and with you!  For those of you who couldn't make it--I am planning at least one, and maybe two, road trips for 2011.  While I love the southwest, I am open to any suggestions for additional road trip locations.

I am now home in Santa Fe for the remainder of the year, working on exploring new negatives, catching up on testing and doing some writing.  The colder days (19° F yesterday morning!) seem just right for "playing" in the darkroom or on my computer.  As always, email or call me with your questions, discoveries, or successes!

News and Notes

New Alan Ross Representation in Europe and New York

I am pleased to announce a new relationship with the German art house LUMAS.  Based in Berlin, LUMAS specializes in high-quality digital reproductions of the works of photographers from around the world.  They are offering a selection of my images from the American west, taken primarily in Yosemite National Park, as limited edition digital prints.

We began discussions before my March trip to Athens and Bavaria, and I was able to visit their gallery in Munich.  I was impressed with the quality of everything they exhibited.  The digital masters at LUMAS then spent months helping me translate the nuances I can achieve in the darkroom to the digital editions. I am extremely impressed with the quality and detail achieved in the final prints.  LUMAS has eight galleries in Germany, and additional galleries in Zurich, Paris and New York.

Dallas Gallery Opening

Sun to Moon Gallery will feature my work in an exhibit running from January 20 - March 5, 2011.  Twenty-five prints, including many of my rarely seen architectural and abstract images, will be on display.  The opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, January 22nd, from 5:00 - 8:00 pm.  If you live in or near Dallas, or happen to be there in January, I would love to see you at the opening!  A one-day workshop is also planned in conjunction with the opening reception.  Stay tuned for details.

Masking - Final Edition

Thanks to everyone who weighed in on the beta version of my masking article.  The input was extremely helpful as I fine-tuned, tweaked and clarified.  The final version is now available on CD or via download.  Those of you who got the beta version should already have received a new download or a new CD.  A series of long-weekend masking workshops is in the works for 2011.  Dates and details to follow in the next newsletter.

Archival Inkjet Prints

I've said it before and I'll say it again...creating a fine black-and-white photograph in a traditional darkroom isn't always easy, but creating the same print digitally is even harder in my view.  As I have gotten more in tune with the advanced aspects of digital printing, both through my work for Ravenswood and in creating the archival inkjet prints, the process has become less arduous and more cost-effective.  As a result, we have adjusted the price of my inkjet prints to $49.99, plus shipping.

Tech Tips, Notes and Thoughts

In the opening of this newsletter, I mentioned wanting to do some testing - something I feel I ought to do regularly.  One of Ansel's favorite quotes (attributed to Pasteur) was "chance favors the prepared mind." Having started his creative life as a musician, he brought that musician's discipline to his photography - the equivalent of a regimen of playing scales.

The first thing to test periodically is your light meter.  Except for one old Nikon, none of my cameras have meters in them - so my meter(s) are the foundation of every exposure I make.  The only requirement I have of a meter is that it be linear - that is, if I expose a gray or white card in dim light, bright light , medium and dim again, and expose exactly as the meter indicates, each exposure should yield the same density on film.  If the densities match closely my meter is good, but if one exposure doesn't match the others, the meter needs to go to the shop.  This test is well worth the time and cost of a roll or few sheets of film!

That's it for this month.  Happy photographing and remember - the "Oh! Zone" must be preserved!
