Greetings!

The April 25th Ladue Creeks clean up was a staggering success.  A total of  571 volunteers collected 4.87 tons, or 9,740 pounds of trash!  Unique discoveries included a walking cane, a typewriter, a 10 lb. snapping turtle, 6 snakes, a sink with hot and cold faucets, a dog leash, an x-rated movie, TV, a new tent w/stakes, lg. inflatable river raft, lots of pipe, xmas tree, bicycle, brake drums, carburetor, one living fish!, a walker, ceramics, wooden pallet, barstool w/ red leather seat, chairs, antique bottles, 2 windows, large chemical container, 1/2 bath tub, one complete bath tub, arrow heads, locked safe, plastic Noah's Ark play set, many hoses, rusty rifle, water gauge, construction materials, old beer cans, chain link fencing, mating frogs, large blue drum, 1/2 portapotty, numerous golf balls, basket ball, chemical container, and 12,000 plastic bags and newspaper wrappers (enemy #1!)

Black Creek VolunteersMany kudos to clean up organizers Randy and Fiona Woods who spearheaded this entire operation from start to finish.  We are fortunate indeed to have them as members of our community. Randy and Fiona have also compiled a report of the event, which they will share at the June 3rd quarterly meeting (see below).  Also, check out this fun slide show of a great day!

Many thanks go out to our partners as well for making this collaborative project a grand success.  The City of Ladue provided logistical support and turned out the entire public works department who spent all day Saturday picking up trash from coordinated drop off points.   Missouri Botanical Garden, sponsor of the Deer Creek Watershed Friends, provided staffing support and guidance.  Missouri Department of Conservation provided T-shirts, gloves, trash bags and clean-up expertise.  Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District provided the central dumpster and took away all the trash.  Ladue Garden Club, thanks to the leadership of Maureen Helfers and Louise Gazzoli, organized the "Trash Bash" volunteer celebration after the clean up.  A special thanks to Lester Miller for hosting the volunteer party by providing a beautiful outdoor courtyard setting for the event.  Finally, many Ladue businesses donated food and prizes.

It was a picture perfect day for an outdoor clean up and celebration, and a good time was had by all.  Stay tuned for next steps as we work together to assess and improve the Deer Creek Watershed, and be sure to join us for our Summer Quarterly meeting coming up on Wednesday, June 3rd.

Sincerely,
Rick Holton

Deer Creek Park Service Project

Invasive Species removed and trees planted

The River des Peres Watershed Coalition held invasive species removal and native planting events in April at Deer Creek Park in Maplewood.  Volunteers from across the county helped to remove Japanese knotweed, Japanese hops, bush honeysuckle, and wintercreeper from the streambanks in the park.  They then re-vegetated the area with over 500 native forbs and more than 200 tree and shrub seedlings. Congrats to this group!  For more information regarding the River des Peres Watershed Coalition, go to www.riverdesperes.org.
