11 For the LORD God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The LORD will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.
God does not promise to give us everything we think is good, but he will not withhold what is permanently good. He will give us the means to walk along his paths, but we must do the walking. When we obey him, he will not hold anything back that will help us serve him. Verse and commentary above is copied from the Life Application Study Bible Reading Plan on YouVersion. John 1:29-34
John Testifies About Jesus
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel."
32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'34 I have seen and I testify that this is God's Chosen One."t
John claims he literally saw the Holy Spirit come down from heaven in the form of a dove and rest on Jesus signifying that He was God's chosen one. Why don't we see such miracles today? I think we do, we just put them in the category of coincidence. For example, I've had several people tell me, after I talk to them about Jesus, that 2 or 3 other people have recently been "bugging" them or talking to them about God or Jesus or church. Coincidence? I don't believe in them any more. God doesn't show off. He does miracles for His purpose - which is to bring us into right relationship with Him. And this Lamb of God thing. What kind of team has a lamb as a mascot? Yet, our enemy is our sin and the devil. Both are defeated by accepting that the Lamb of God gave His life to defeat our sin and the devil for all time (Gave His life, then resurrected! I don't think that Satan, the Romans, or the religious leaders were ready for that one). We just need to accept that gift and let Him take over. Believe me, it's such a relief when you do.
