1 Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor! The LORD rescues them when they are in trouble.2 The LORD protects them and keeps them alive. He gives them prosperity in the land and rescues them from their enemies. As the life of a deer depends upon water, so our lives depend upon God. Those who seek him and long to understand him find never-ending life. Feeling separated from God, this psalmist wouldn't rest until he restored his relationship with God because he knew that his very life depended on it. Luke 23:26-31
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him.28 Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.29 For the time will come when you will say, 'Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!'30 Then "'they will say to the mountains, "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover us!"'t
31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?"
I think we're headed for some increasingly "dry" times. Many people around us reject Jesus as the Way and the Truth and the Life. God will not be mocked. It may seem that way for now, but in the end all will be made right. Those who depend on themselves, money, power, stuff for their happiness will eventually lose all. Only Jesus lasts and only our dependence on Him sustains. |
