Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy.3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd.4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. ( Why did a rich guy care about a poor carpenter from Nazareth? He had power and money. Apparently it wasn't enough - something was missing. Can you think of anyone in our popular culture who seem to have everything but notoriously end up looking for something more? Tiger Woods? Brittany Spears? Charlie Sheen? Lookin for love in all the wrong places. John 14:6 6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life... It's not Tiger Blood that gives life, it's the blood of Jesus shed for us. Amazing!)
When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today."6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a sinner."
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount."
Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."
This story is interesting. Didn't Jesus previously say that it was very hard for a rich man to get to heaven (salvation). Here's the formula for all those who are rich (I define rich as anyone who has food, shelter, and enough stuff to make them think they can manage to take care of themselves i.e., almost everyone in America.): Seek out Jesus - climb a tree if necessary, invite Him into your life, then make sure your willing to give up whatever is necessary to follow Jesus. Not sure of the details? Ask Jesus. Read the instructions.
