Luke 23:1-5 NIV (1) Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate. (2) And they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Christ, a king." Part lie, part true. Jesus previously said to give Caesar what belongs to Caesar and give God what belongs to God. (3) So Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?" "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. (4) Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no basis for a charge against this man." (5) But they insisted, "He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here." We forget how radical Jesus' teaching was. He taught that God values each of us equally, that money and power don't matter to God, that each of us has access to God's Love and Power. This teaching was dangerous to the powers of the time, just not in the way they thought. |
