Luke 21: 1-4 NIV
As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.  (2)  He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.  (3)  "I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. (4)  All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."

I don't think Jesus wants us all to be poor.  He does want us to recognize that He is really responsible for our income.  He'd like us to use it to further His Kingdom in some way or other - not just giving to the church or a charity and being done with it.  I wish I had enough faith to give to God everything I have to live on.  I sometimes give more than I have in the checking, but in my case it's giving when I know I can just use a line of credit or a credit card if I need more money.  To give to God knowing that you might not eat this week is a whole different level.  Lord forgive me and all of us who depend on OUR resources and ourselves instead of depending entirely on you and following your will perfectly.
