Luke 19:45-48 NIV Luke 19:45-48 NIV Then he entered the temple area and began driving out those who were selling. (46) "It is written," he said to them, "'My house will be a house of prayer'; but you have made it 'a den of robbers.'"
When Jesus says "It is written...", He is referring to the Hebrew Scriptures - what Christians call the Old Testament. Jesus is referring here to Isaiah 56:7
Isaiah 56:7 NIV these I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations."
Jews coming to the temple without an animal to sacrifice so their sins could be forgiven could buy one from these merchants set up in the courtyard. But, like movie popcorn or amusement park food, the prices were inflated because the merchants knew people desperately needed or wanted what they were selling and it was too late to comparison shop. This infuriated Jesus and He drove the merchants out. You can imagine that this did not improve Jesus' standing with the merchants of Jerusalem. These people like many today were interested in making money, not following God. They, like the Jewish Leaders, wanted to get rid of Jesus.
In what ways are we interested in making money or getting stuff instead of following Jesus?
(47) Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him. (48) Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
